A free copy of the Studio Canal disc fell into my lap yesterday. Good grief, the black levels are horrendous! The resolution and colors were decent but my goodness...probably the worst black levels I've seen on UHD yet.

Been looking up info on all the various editions. Correct me if I'm wrong, but when it comes to PART II:

Original LG BD: Ancient, DVD-era master.

2011 SC remaster: Good picture quality, but inexplicably misframed.

2018 UHD: Excellent resolution/clarity, but black levels are elevated and colors are weird.

And all of them have the same flat-sounding 5.1 track?

The colors aren't particularly weird, but it's been tealed in the blacks, so most of the blacks have a blu-ish cast which gives it a colder feel even if it's not immediately evident.

Just after reading the last few posts here, but I had thought both the UK/Euro release of First Blood and the US were the same in terms of PQ, am I wrong? Was going to order it from WOW HD which would be the US edition anyway, but just want to be sure.

One would hope they'd release it in the fall to coincide with Last Blood.

Make sure your TV is set to proper gamma of 2.4.

That being proper is debatable for sure, but I do think a higher gamma benefits a lot of modern releases.

Proper would be even higher, such as 2.5+. That’s how real movies look like. Gamma of 2.2 is what anti black crush crusaders use and then complain of a washed out look.

Many professionals still say 2.2 is the industry standard and should be used. I know the arguments against that, especially for a dark room, but that doesn't make it untrue. Hence "debatable." Though as I said, I do think in a pitch dark room a higher gamma makes sense now-a-days.

What is a "real movie"? A showprint? An answer print? An internegative? What a meaningless term to use.

A theatrical 35mm print. Nothing else matters.

Why are you into UHD at all if that's your standard? HDR and 4k detail are pretty revisionist compared to what an 80's theater showed.

Sure wish I had access to 35mm prints at home like you do then, must be a fantastic experience since nothing else matters. I'm envious, really.

Because I don’t mind the extra detail. I care for the overall aesthetic. UHD, HDR, and OLED are giving me the closest thing to 35mm print at home that I’ve ever seen. And I’m loving it tremendously!
