I caught The Shrouds last night. Pretty slick look at the paranoia and manipulation that comes with modern day's mounting digital coverage, and exposure. Reminded me a lot of Philip K. Dick's novels, in style and subject.

Did anyone catch this? I meant to last night but completely forgot.

One person I talked to described it as an "arthouse clip show." (He didn't mean it negatively, but still.) The Channel refers to it as "kaleidoscopic." Both sound pretentious and neither make me want to actually watch it.

I caught this a day or two after its streaming premiere and really liked it.

Just started my subscription the other day on Sunday yep that's it. Here's what's currently in my watchlist as some of these just got released on Blu-Ray, and 4K while the rest haven't gotten Blu-Rays yet. Also there's a lot of Japanese films on here too.

My watchlist
The Lower Depths
I Live in Fear
49th Parallel
A Canterbury Tale
The Small Back Room
I Know Where I'm Going!
Drunken Angel
The Bad Sleep Well
Fires on the Plain
The Burmese Harp
8 1/2
II Sorpasso
The Bicycle Thieves
Red Beard
Snow Trail
Kill!
The Hit
Great Expectations
How to Get Ahead In Advertising
Say Amen! Somebody a documentary on black gospel music
Powwow Highway another Handmade Films title hmmmmm.... I wonder if we might see a Blu-Ray of this next year
II Bidone
Branded to Kill
Europe '51
Oliver Twist

So a lot of British, and Japanese cinema on here plus some Italian films on here too. I'm excited to watch practically all of these as I'm a huge fan of films from these countries, and a big fan of black gospel music too. I'll also be going through my Blu-Ray collection too don't have many Criterion titles left to watch physically so time to start checking out a bunch of titles from their streaming service.

So got bored with my dvr and headed over to the channel.

Decided to give D.E.B.S. a shot and really enjoyed it. I like the vibe of films like that from the mid-2000s, especially when they're pretty well done. Boredom cured.

D.E.B.S. iz iconic ~

Queens of the Stone Age: Alive in the Catacombs has been on constant rotation for me. Really glad they included the Paris segment as well; together both pieces feel like a full concert film.

R.I.P. Terence Stamp

I think I'm going to watch The Hit tonight in his honor.

Hoping to watch a couple of expiring movies this weekend, especially Tea and Sympathy.

The expiring picks I've already seen:

As always, my favorites are in bold.
  • Burning (2018)
  • Deep End (1970)
  • Funny Games (1997)
  • Good Will Hunting (1997)
  • Heat (1995)
  • Neptune Frost (2021)
  • No Way Out (1987)
  • Party Girl (1995)
  • Sexy Beast (2000)
  • The Swimmer (1968)

What I'm planning to watch:

I'll definitely revisit No Way Out. It's been too long since I've seen it, and I barely remember it. It's a remake of The Big Clock, which isn't streaming on the Channel (or anywhere else), but I have it digitally. I'll watch both back-to-back.

Nothing else is jumping out at me - I already own several of these - so I'm open to recommendations.

BTW:

A couple I may likely rewatch are Ripley's Game and Remember My Name. Try those on for size, along with D.E.B.S. of course.

Not sure what else I may get to…

(Haven't managed to get to my Burning or The Swimmer discs just yet, but it could happen.)

I watched both, and they're a lot of fun - especially as a double feature.

No idea what I'm watching tonight.

I don't Remember.

I'm a big fan of Alan Rudolph, and Geraldine Chaplin, so I'd go with I liked it and I want to see it again so I can remember it better.

Interesting that Berry Berenson was on one of the 9/11 planes that struck the WTC… (she was Anthony Perkins real wife at one time and also plays his wife in the film).

Anyway just coming up for air again (mostly spent my movie watching time this month with TCM's summer of the stars and about to mostly give up on it for now and finish the rest early next month.)

I do plan on hitting the channel tonight…

Oh I watched that Remember My Name when it arrived, I thought it was good. Unusual roles for the leads, an interesting story about odd people, very hard to tell where it's headed. I've generally found Alan Rudolph to be worth a look, and this is a good one.

I see The Devils is headed back to the channel next month. Are they really gonna give us that awful 480p scan again? Where is this movie's mother?! Who is looking after it?!

I ended up watching nothing last night. None of the picks are really calling out to me.

The Alan Rudolph movie looks interesting, but I wouldn't watch it if any other director were involved. Ditto for the Gene Hackman movie Eureka.

I'm somewhat curious about Nobody’s Hero, so maybe that.

Otherwise, I might end up only watching a couple of shorts and calling it a month.

It's the 108 minute cut, which isn't the uncensored cut. That's all I know.

I can live with the censored version, but not with poor picture quality. But yeah, it probably means its the same old copy.

Having watched Remember My Name earlier this month, I would describe it as the "dark sister" companion to STRAIGHT TIME.

I didn't much care for Eureka when I saw it originally more or less first run in a real live movie theater, but perhaps I was just disappointed it wasn't better, or was just tired from work or something. I think it deserves another chance from me given that was approx "42" years ago, and there are some who think it's a really great movie. Regardless, I'll be watching a blu-ray if/when I do.

Remember My Name and/or Ripley's Game are what I will be trying on for size tonight most likely. See what mood I'm in when I get around to them.

Maybe you should check out Ripley's Game or one of the other Ripley variants that may be on the channel (The Talented Mr. Ripley or Purple Noon) if you haven't seen them. The latter two are pretty decent. I could stand a refresher of Ripley's Game but I recall it being good-ish. (I haven't made it to An American Friend yet… need to fix that.)

Nobody's Hero is on my list of other possibilities… tbd.

I haven't seen The Talented Mr. Ripley or Ripley's Game yet, but I do own them on this DVD set.

Not as good as the HD on the Channel, but when it comes to juggling expiring picks, I tend to prioritize the rarer ones or at least the ones not available elsewhere or only available with ads (No Way Out is an example of the latter).

I watched The American Friend a few years ago and really liked it.

I still need to see Purple Noon.

I imported the Italian dvd of Ripley's Game way before there was any US release, about 20 years ago. Didn't even know there had been a US release since. I'm hoping it's seen an HD upgrade, but won't be surprised if it hasn't.

Remember My Name on the other hand does not have a disc release that I know of and it's pretty rare to get a chance to see it.
