Not a movie...
The Skyrim PSVR (PS4) bundle is only $320. This is an "incredible" deal. I paid $480 about 6 months ago, and I thought that was decent. It was $450 a few days ago, but with a couple extra VR games thrown in; you can buy those extra games for a lot less than $130, but I wouldn't. ![]() I mention this JIC anybody might be considering it, this bundle is getting rather hard to get for anything close to this price anywhere else it seems, so I bet BB will sell out quickly. Either other places are truly sold out, or they're just not offering the bundle right now so they won't have to price-match, IDK. EBGames has it too. [I wasn't going to post this, but BB has sold a good chunk of these in the half hour since I first checked their site, so...] |

There are several games that just by themselves make it worthwhile to me. Caveats: a surprising number of people get more than a little nauseous in VR, and "anything you wear" (??, what they said when I asked) is non-returnable at BB once you open it. So you do take a bit of a chance if unfamiliar with fully-immersed VR. Online, BB had 24 of these when I looked 1/2 hour before I posted before. They have 4 now...and I bet they won't get any more, most common U.S. online retailers don't have (m)any. |

Regarding PS4 VR, it's not just Best Buy but Walmart, EB Games and Shoppers (if you can find it) carry them as well for the same price.
This is part of Sony's Days of Play sale which lasts until the 18th I think. It was supposed to start on the 8th, but Walmart jumped the gun by a day. DOOM VR bundle for $250 CDN and SKYRIM VR bundle for $317 CDN. This is cheaper than the States, especially after exchange. I picked up the SKYRIM bundle over the weekend. I figured that the extra wands are cheaper in the bundle than separately. I also prefer the SKYRIM game a lot more than the DOOM game. This does look to me to be the gradual slowdown of the VR bundles for the PS4. They recently announced the decline of the PS4, so this would include the PS4 VR. I think it's expected that they will release a new VR bundle for PS5. Still, this is cool technology for $300 CDN. Also, there are a lot of VR games on sale. I bought a bunch from Walmart online for $19.99 CDN, but I'm down in NY state this week and a lot of those games are $9.99 US here so I'll be returning the Canadian ones when I get back. |

^ Yup, much cheaper here now than in the U.S., the *good* bundles (with v2 PSVR, like Skyrim and Doom) are very hard to find in the U.S. (online).
And good luck trying to get WM or EBG to order something in for you; they either have it in store, or you don't get it. I am especially flabbergasted that EBG can't get stuff that customers want unless it's a pre-order (what they always tell me). They only stock what they're sent by "central". How goofy is that? I'm surprised they're still in business, they're way too small to emulate WM's methods IMO. |

I picked up Kingsman 4k Special Edition for $20 at Best Buy on the weekend. Was very surprised at that deal. Comes with the cards and extra booklet.

As someone who worked briefly with VR tech, it’s hard to get into anything less than Oculus or Vive as the resolution and optics of those headsets are pretty top notch. Not sure how the PSVR competes but it is mighty tempting for the price. |

As far as VR headset "resolution", that is largely a red herring issue. Of course more is better, but it's a lot like CPU GHz, it's only a tiny part of the practical and overall story. People who have "all" the consumer VR systems say that the headsets all have some drawbacks, but the PSVR is generally agreed the most comfortable (they did do a really good job re that), and most say the PSVR display actually has the least "screen door effect". The PSVR has very good optics, don't be fooled by the price, the fresnel lenses that some others use also have a lot of drawbacks. The PSVR does have lower rez though, it's really "half-1080p" per eye, but the PS4 is the real problem, the processing bottleneck, it's all they could do. The PSVR has a *standard* frame rate that is usually much higher than the other VR systems. IOW it all fits together into giving a certain viewing experience, which is much better than you might think *for the money*. Sony did a great job with this *for the money* (gotta keep saying that!). v2 is IMO much better than v1, don't be misled by what Sony advertises as the diffs and what non-v2-owners say, the v2 is actually much nicer to use than the v1 (which is still for sale), the headset cord is much more convenient/lighter, and the v2 processing unit is dead quiet (v1 is quite noisy) besides having HDR passthrough. A bonus is you can watch 3D BDs with it on a "pretend" ~20' screen. Edit: if I may add a suggestion to anybody interested in this... Once you are sure that you don't get physically upset by VR, you should grab a Farpoint/Aim bundle. This combo alone would sell you on the PSVR if you like FPSs. It is the best-integrated game/peripheral you can pretty much get in gaming. Besides that this game, though simple and not very deep as games go these days, is one of the two or three best-looking on PSVR. I say this now because this FP/Aim bundle is getting a bit hard to find even for its normal $100 ($80 on sale, good luck with that...), so grab it if you see it and just don't open it if unsure of your VR reaction. Don't bother with FP without the Aim, you gotta have/see/use the Aim. It's a $100 experience fee to see "the future of gaming", what it could be...impressive. Another best-looking/performing PSVR game is Wipeout, $30 at BB and you DL the PSVR version automatically/"free" when installing. Last edited by cfraser; 06-14-2018 at 04:52 PM. |

Thanks cfraser for the write-up on your experiences with PSVR.
I'll have to wait and see whether Sony will continue supporting it and where VR is heading, and Shuhei Yoshida expressed in various interviews that Sony knows it's new tech and the adoption rate isn't going to be huge for the first few years. However, to see Sony be the only consumer-friendly VR enabled company definitely makes me wonder if they'll use that to their advantage or not. |

I am not a big gamer as much as I used to be. I'm more into movies now, but am still interested in gaming.
I'm primarily looking at the PSVR system as an alternative to 3D TV. However, my favourite games are still survival horror, racing, and simulators so this should be fun to try out. Thanks for the review of VR systems. The price is right for the PSVR. Don't know if I'm committed enough to spend more. |

^ For racing, the Wipeout Omega Collection @ $30 would be a good value for you. Great PSVR conversion, one of the best. For "survival horror", Resident Evil 7, also one of the best-implemented PSVR games (reportedly, I haven't played it, I've been waiting for the "Gold" edition to get cheaper). [Edit: by "survival horror" you're probably thinking more like The Last of Us, but RE7 is likely the "best closest" PSVR thing, definitely creepy based on the demo, people say scary in PSVR.]
Re watching 3D BDs with the PSVR headset: my main complaint is I can't get the system to provide audio output to my main HT system. I want to use all my subs and Atmos etc., but I haven't been able to get audio by any other means than the headset output via the processing unit box. This is just for 3D, for 2D no problem. I played around with this a lot 6+ months ago and forget exactly what I concluded... Last edited by cfraser; 06-16-2018 at 05:03 PM. |

Good possible SCOP opportunity: I just picked up the new Tomb Raider 4K for $19.99 using SCOP. Shelf tags were all $29.99 at the front and new release racks but scanned in at $32.99.
Also then used my $15 in Reward certs and paid only $7.xx after tax! ![]() |
