Any truth to the rumors that this film might also be a "Talkie?"

Finally? It's hardly a shocker. I can't remember him saying that there weren't going to be thousands of CGI shots in the film.

It's a massive space opera motion picture, there are going to be CGI effects wall-to-wall. If anyone thought it wasn't going to have any CGI then they probably can't tell what's real anyway.

Finally? With all due respect to the hard-hitting journalists at furiousfanboys.com this is what Abrams had to say six months ago...

http://collider.com/star-wars-the-fo...ams-interview/

“There are obviously an enormous amount of CG effects in the film, and I can’t wait for you to see the combination. But it was very important that we build as many sets as we could and that the film have a tangible, sort of authentic quality that you believed that these things were actually happening in a real space with real sunlight, if it was an exterior scene, or if we could build a big portion of a scene and not have anything be blue screen, do it where we could. It was a very important piece of work.”

Of course anyone who knows anything about making films knows that this was going to have a ton of CGI effects shots. The problem is that all we've heard from Disney is "practical this" and "practical that". So the fact that this film will likely have just as many if not more CGI shots than the Prequels and use less models and miniatures (practical effects) is very telling. They're just pandering to the petulant children that you can see in this very thread, who mask ignorance with sarcasm.

I don't give a crap how much is practical/CGI etc....I just want it all to blend in together and for the different types of SFX to complement each other and not take me out of the story like the shoddy job Comandante Lucas did with the Special Editions and the prequels. Phantom Menace Yoda puppet...WTF was that. We got a believable Muppet in Empire and Jedi and then we were handed something from the Build a Bear Workshop in that flick. I guess they had to go to CGI after that one!

I just hope with the practical and CGI mix we get actual real looking fake characters. Not something like looks like Dex in AotC. A group of 5 year olds with crayons could have done better than that.

Oh God, that Yoda puppet in Phantom Menace was HORRIBLE. Not even close to the one in Empire.

Yes, and pretty much any other time practical effects were brought up he would reiterate that there would be plenty of CGI as well.

See Star Wars Celebration and Comic Con, two very public venues to promote the film with plenty of media coverage, and he made sure to bring it up as soon as practical effects were mentioned.

I'll admit it was a little creepy, but I still thought it tolerable back in '99. After all, "Phantom Menace" took place over 30 years before "Empire", so why should he look exactly the same?

That said, I do think the CG version created for the Blu-Rays was a better match, regarding "Clones" and "Sith".

I hate that sequence, too; its probably my biggest gripe about the Special Editions to this day. The whole narrative for "Jedi" just stops, and the sequence adds nothing of lasting value. We never see those new characters again, so its safe to assume they were either stranded at Jabba's palace following his death, or died on the Sail Barge when it exploded.

Exactly.

And Kathleen Kennedy said this over two years ago.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/...ctical-effects

But she's also wary of films becoming overly reliant on this technology, forgetting older methods. Jurassic Park is a great example of how CG can be successfully blended with practical effects, and it seems this philosophy, also informed by the original Star Wars trilogy, will underpin the production of Episode VII and the future sequels. "It's a conversation we're having all the time in the development of Episode VII. Looking at all the Star Wars movies and getting a feel for what even some of the early films did, combining real locations and special effects – that's something we're looking very seriously at."

This resulted in rapturous applause from the audience, with many glowing lightsabers being waved in frantic approval. "So we're going to find some very cool locations that we're going to use in support of Episode VII," promised Kennedy. "And I think we're probably going to end up using every single tool in the toolbox to create the look of these movies."

And when Davis asked what exactly was in that toolbox, Kennedy said, "It's using model makers; it's using real droids; it's taking advantage of artwork that you actually can touch and feel. And we want to do that in combination with CG effects. We figure that's what will make it real."

All I'm saying is be cautious, I know what you're saying but really, the same thing happened with the prequels, exactly the same, pre-release.
I don't want to be cautious here. I love the Prequels. All the hate I started to let get to me later was swept away when I watched them again on Blu. I'm optimistic almost always. The hype machine is going to build to epic levels for this no matter what.

Another topic - And as for the post a few days ago from Gary Whitta sharing his opinion about George Lucas. I say screw Gary Whitta. George Lucas had and continues to have a creative freedom that Whitta will never have in his career as a gun for hire screenwriter. If it wasn't for George Lucas you would never be involved in a Star Wars movie Gary. So go cry a river elsewhere.

Watch the Celebration/Comic-Con panels. All they talk about are "practical" effects and the BTS trailer they reiterated the same nonsense.
