Her delivery may leave something to be desired, but she does have a point.

Always have been a fan of her work from Burn Up, .hack, Persona 4, Alita, Evangelion, Plastic Little, Devil Hunter Yohko and so on but kind of figured she is a hard person to deal with.

It doesn’t surprise me she wrote that post in that tone. I know it’s water under the bridge right now, but I still get ticked because of the way she acted during the Gunsmith Cats Kickstarter. Robert is a much nicer man than I.

Sometimes it's better when celebrities/voice actors aren't active on social media and keep quiet.

Lads an acquaintance of mine is watching for the first time and I found out he watched the first two rebuild movies first, watched the series, and doesn't know End-of exists

He says "the ending means nothing and they ran out of money halfway through the series and didn't try"

Like I wanna talk about it but I feel he's closed himself off lmao

Different strokes and all, but there's something frustrating about folks who are all onboard with something and as soon as it gets weird they turn-off their attention completely and go "it was a bad trip nothing happened." Stuff like that only makes me pay MORE attention!

Can someone explain / link to me more about this whole "running out of money" complaint? (aside from the issues revolving around the show's resolution / final two episodes where Eva TV obviously never resolved its overarching plot elements, instead choosing to resolve the show's core themes instead)

But prior to the final two? Even if Eva was forced to do more with less, we still saw plenty of well-animated, unique battles in the back half of the show. Hell, many of them were far more creative, visually-engaging, and memorable than many nearer the middle.

People often point to moments like the elevator scene, with it typically being completely lost on them that it's deliberate (and amazing, being one of my favorite scenes in the show XD). I mean, yeah, obviously with the end in sight, the show shifted priorities to get to the meat of all the introspection and character study. But surely that was all part of the plan from the start, and not merely a side effect of a dwindling budget, right?

So seriously, explain this complaint to me; I genuinely do not get how anyone actually capable of understanding the show can fault its back half for any reason relating to budget, especially with how the episodes currently look after the Director's Cut iterations and endless home media tweaks. The show looked amazing start to finish in 1995 and beyond.

Western fans associate "money" or "budget" with the ability to have things appear visually stunning. In truth, only 8 episodes were completely done prior to the October 1995 broadcast start and they hadn't even started key animation on half of the total episodes according to Anno in the 1997 Schizo Evangelion book. It was a race against time, not a lack of money to complete the episodes prior to broadcasting. At around episodes 18 and 19, the production had reached its limit of what could be done. Thus the "director's cut" versions of episodes 20-24 and the End of Evangelion movie were created to restore what the original goals were in those episodes. It culminated in the final two episodes being the re-use of older completed cels/backgrounds instead of newly animated content because there simply wasn't time to create that. No amount of money would've hired people that were busy working on other projects to animate, so it's not money, but time that created that issue.

With the exception of the final two episodes, it's very unlikely that any change in time affected a shift of mood like Eva had. Episode 16 was where it shifted to a psychological drama, which would make sense in a 26 episode series from a story-telling standpoint. Given that scripts, storyboards, and planning were already done prior to that, changing it suddenly would've had more work on a short timeframe in comparison to re-using assets or holding scenes longer. Something more like the length of time on a specific scene in episode 24 is evident of this: the scene happens the visual way it was meant to happen, but takes longer and other, side, bits were trimmed (probably scenes like Shinji's loneliness in the city).

Aside from some of the obvious scenes like the elevator, or the one full minute that Unit 01
[Show spoiler]holds onto Kaworu before killing him
, there's other little things that can be picked up on throughout that suggest money was an issue from the start. Character's go stretches of talking to each other off screen while the camera focuses on a static image, their mouths are often obscured when they talk to each other, etc.

One of my favorite interpretations of the series is that the show itself is taking a meta look at the struggles of producing anime and poking fun of itself as an industry. SEELE representing Gainax (withholding funds and insisting their director make it work), the EVA's only working for 5 minutes (can't afford to animate it longer than that), and Shinji (Anno) being the only one who can save them all.

People simply do not understand aesthetic intention. I know some folks who complained about the limited animation and painted stills in Kill la Kill for example. It flies right over their heads. Regardless if it were done for cost reasons, it's the INTENT and HOW IT LOOKS that counts. Saying Gainax "didn't try" is completely hyperbolic.

*still of a perfectly on-model character with only their mouth moving*

ppl: WONDERFUL ANIMATION

*two characters zipping and popping around in single keyframes and exaggerated poses*

ppl: oh my god that's so lazy and cheap and bad, get it away!

DIFFERENT STROKES pretty much lmao

I may end up going without a slipcover copy. Once the hype dies down I'll be able to get a copy for cheap again on eBay. I was looking at some of the past sales from just a month or two back and it was a lot cheaper before the Netflix release.

Regardless of whether its a sequel or retelling I'm referring to what the point of the story is in both that the video is trying to explain.

I think he could have saved himself a lot of time and just lumped everything besides the original into the "money grab timeline". But wow $6 billion from Pachinko, I wonder what kind of cut he kept after the Japanese mafia and government took theirs.

I loved the elevator scene, I was surprised when I saw a video titled 'in defense of the elevator scene' in my recommendations.. I don't think it needs defending
