I placed an order really fast too after receiving the text that he had stock. What has me concerned is that when I placed my order it didn't mention anything about the sets being "damaged". It said the sets had slight blemishes. I guess he changed the listing but my concern is are all the sets he sold this morning in fact damaged or where the initial ones he listed just slightly blemished while the final ones the ones with damage? I don't mind a slightly imperfect set with minor blemishes but not interested in getting one that is flat out damaged. I did email them about this issue but have not heard back yet.

If you have any concerns and questions about GHV's Gamera go to 12:35 in this video.

From what Mike said last night, he had 40-50 copies left that he would list today and then had an additional small amount that were damaged that he would list later. Just a guess, maybe the description changed on the site after he sold the ones with the minor blemishes to damaged for the future sale of that small quantity.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I just watched his video and subscribed to his channel. He does say only a few were damaged and most are just slightly blemished so I should be okay.

Wow I pre-ordered only a mere 2 weeks before release (through Barnes & Noble) & I'm SO... glad that I did (LOVING the set too).

It's funny that I pre-ordered the Criterion Godzilla set months before release expecting it to get scarce yet to this day you can get still find plenty of it.

Yet with the Gamera set I thought well not a lot of people care about Gamera so I have nothing to worry about. Yet it's now been sold-out for weeks & is going for scary prices from 3rd party sellers.

I hope Arrow does reprint this set soon b/c more folks needs to experience this goldmine of a box set.

That is because the Godzilla set isn't a limited edition. Well the US set isn't limited, but the UK set was and it sold out pretty quickly, so they renegotiated and released a second, and final, run that might still be available.

Criterion doesn't dance to the Limited Edition tune here in the US. That set will be around for a very long time.

They will be releasing a standard edition box similar to many of their other sets that dropped the book and any other extras that came with the L.E. version.

If you placed the order before the listing changed to state "damaged" (as I did), I'm pretty sure you're only getting a blemished copy. In his last video, the dude from Grindhouse Video explicitly stated that he was pulling out all the damaged copies before listing the set for sale and earlier comments make it sound like the non-damaged copies sold out AND THEN the dude added one more time to the listing while noting that the last few copies are damaged.

I think you should be fine if you ordered before the first sell out today.

I'm still waiting for an order to be received. Granted I had it shipped to Canada, but I placed the order on 8/20, and he still hasn't shipped it yet...he said he is super busy and swamped, but hopefully it leaves by the end of the week.

This is from the interview you've referenced:

"It’s no secret that the boxset has been limited to 8,000 copies – 5,000 in the US and 3,000 in the UK. At the time we decided that quantity, it seemed like a sensible amount for a niche product that would last until the end of the year, so we’ve been genuinely flabbergasted that it’s pretty much sold out within its first week of release! I’m very sad for those who wanted a copy and weren’t able to get one in time, as we worked very hard on it and I want everyone who wants a copy to get one."

Nowhere does it say that the right holder(s) set a limit to how many copies could be distributed.

Well, the limited set price is jacked on eBay and OOP now- but if you missed it, like I did, do not fear, Arrow will release a standard set early next year, I was just told.

As I am not a die hard Gamera fan, I can live with one that is a bit more affordable- maybe in the $70-80 price range- and hopefully will fit nicely on my shelf and not have to be a super sized brick. Personally, I wish the Godzilla set was the same, but so be it- the movies are what matter.

For anyone here who is concerned about the audio sync issues on Gamera The Brave, I received the following email from Arrow today:

Quote:
We are investigating reports of a sync issue on this disc and will make a formal statement via our social media channels if a replacement program for this disc is deemed necessary; however, this cannot be confirmed until our investigation is complete.

I don't think it's UCLA just hoarding it; I think it's legal complications related to donor stipulations and/or unclear ownership if the original donor dies or (in the case of a company or organization) is dissolved. The story back when Shout! Factory tried to get at it was that it would've cost too much, but it sounds like that's a moot point now.

That's great! I'm glad to hear they're at least looking into it. Like I said, I can believe there are some dialogue/FX/music sync issues inherent in the mixes they got from Media Blasters, but the Arrow disc sounds like everything -- at least the dialogue and effects, where the synchronization is easiest to judge -- is off by a similar amount. I'll definitely be on the lookout for any updates.

Very promising; so the nigh perfect Gamera set might become perfectly perfect!

The reason you don't see a lot coming out of UCLA is because they have a policy of only doing photochemical restorations. That involves restoring the elements and creating a new negative to strike projection prints off of. It's an expensive process and their funds are limited. So they pick and choose what they can afford to restore, and the rest just sits there. Personally, I think they should focus on running as much through a scanner as possible, but that isn't their policy.
