And that, IMO, is unfortunate. I don't know what the other sub-forum sections are like here, as I only venture into the UK one, but there there are threads for all the major retailers where delivery/damages/promotions/etc related to the relevant retailers are discussed rather in a thread that should be about the actual release and the film / TV series.

Outside of the US the Steelbooks aren't out yet, so that still remains to be seen. The similarly designed LOTR & Hobbit sets are however out, and there seems to have been far fewer problems outside of the US. HBO actually has nothing to do with the physical releases beyond it being thier programme. Yes they may be branded "HBO" but it's ultimately Warner Bros. that deal with their production. Hence why the Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit 4K Steelbook collections are all extremely similar. |

Far fewer discs to get damaged. But judging by the thread in the Steelbooks forum, a lot of them came with damaged packaging.
HBO more-or-less has nothing to do with this release. |

Now I don't know if my eyes are deceiving me or if this is a problem. Has anyone noticed a very quick blackout? Like it happens with the blink of an eye? I noticed it on the 1st episode and the 5th.

I didn't have any issues with The Hobbitses but my Disc 1 of the Fellowship EE is utterly useless. Definitely a faulty disc. Exchanging it at Target is going to be a pain so I just reached out to WB to see if they can send a replacement disc. Though now that I think about it I should probably finish the rest of the set to see if any other discs are also affected.

Discussing price is one thing but quoting yourself every time there's a $2 price drop gets annoying fast.

My progress has been slow but just got done with disc 3 of season 2. No issues at all this time. I did a gentle wipe of the disc ahead but couldn't see any scratches regardless. Blackwater looks really good despite being mostly a dark presentation. Black levels are very good and there's some good shadow detail and quite happy with my OLED's performance overall. I just hope there's some more pop in the later seasons with the more brighter environments.

Well that mostly depends on your settings. I never considered the blu-rays to be too dark and brightness in HDR mode depends on what you with your settings. Detail is very good though but while still at season 2 I couldn't spot any major difference between the discs unless you do a side by side comparison.

Just finished the sixth season. So far no technical problems at all. It's been interesting noting where the significant improvements are over the blu-rays.
Some episodes there is a huge difference, particularly ones that make effective use of colour, such as the bright green wildfire explosions and the reddish yellows of dragon fire. Also the episodes in proper winter locations, like season 2 in Iceland, the appearance and colour of the snow is noticably better. I have found this improvement has had the side-effect of making some of the artificial snow scenes, such as those in season 6 at Winterfell look less convincing. Another slight niggle I have with it is sometimes it feels like they've gone a little bit overboard on the reflective surfaces, like swords and jewellery, which I've found occassionally a little bit distracting. Occassionally something will catch the light for a period of time and pull attention away from what is supposed to be the focus of the scene. Other than that, the HDR exaggerates the existing problem with how a number of the interior scenes were shot, where the only way to get a reasonable SDR picture for standard TVs was to flood the interior of the castle or building they were shooting in, often through quite small apertures. I found this particularly noticable in earlier seasons, but there has been a few instances later on too. Overall it's pretty substantial upgrade though. Despite it being 2K shot and 2K DI there are a huge number of shots where additional visual information has been retained from the original DI that was lost to compression over the blu-rays. You could remove the HDR entirely and I think it would be the perfect material to demonstrate the advantages UHD brings in terms of bit-rate. |

It's great that Warner Bros./HBO gave one full layer of a disc to one episode, compression is perfect as well as color. I'm one of those who are not obssesed with the K's of original DI, the result is what it matters and in my opinion Game Of Thrones looks and sounds terrific on UHD BD.

What is biggest selling point of this 4k set over Blu-rays which also have dolby atmos? Picture quality in blu-ray is excellent in my opinion. Is it day and night difference in 4k? I love the series and would like to buy it now from target to get 20% offer, but debating is it worth upgrading for 155$? Tbh, i am kind of disappointed with lotr 4k release so worrying too much about throwing away my money. Thanks in advance for your suggestions in advance.

Season 1 is like seeing it for the first time in comparison to the blu-ray. The rest are subtler upgrades.
