Is this just a poll thread, or was there actual news 9besides theatricals coming in Nov) from WB regarding the official plans for the EE's?

I didnt have time to scroll through all the posts.

I'm getting the theatrical's for sure. I'm so sick of the upconverted dvd's pq, it's aweful. I have the EE's on dvd but the theatrical will suffice on blu-ray for now. The EE's are soooo long that I never even watch them all the way through.

WB/NL I hope you can see this...

Remember that it was the theatrical versions that were nominated for Academy Awards, not the Extended. That being said, it is good that it is coming to the format, but this is most likely double dipping.

Does anyone know if the extended editions actually exist in a hidef compatible form. In other words, is there a print or digital equivalent that can be easily converted to 1080p, or, was the extended edition only created in SD for DVD release?

I've only seen the TE on the HD TV channels, I don't think any TV stations have the EE? I could be wrong.

In the case of LotR, they actually have a pretty valid excuse for releasing the different versions separately.
First off, for the record, I vastly prefer the EE's. They don't just have added scenes, they have a completely different directorial style.
On the matter of EE blu-rays: the theatrical cut is a straight catalog release, it is a minimal issue for the studio to release them. No additional work needs to be done on them to restore or adapt them to blu, they just need to press 'em and go. However, with the EE's, they are Jackson's properties, and he is in fact doing some work on them to adjust and enhance them. They are not being "held back" out of some sort of "greedy" marketing scheme, they have not yet been announced for release because they do not yet exist.

The extended edition is simply additional footage which didn't appear on the theatrical edition. It was filmed the same way, so of course the extra scenes can be scanned at high-definition.

Both. I'd normally say EEs, but 2012 is a lifetime away.

The EE's are superior to the TE's. When it comes to buying movies I already own, I'll wait for the EE's. It can't be said enough, the EE's add so much too the movies, they are not cutting room floor, "we're just adding them because the footage exists" extras. They enhance the characters so much. And one more thing... the Mouth of Sauron.

Some special effects were done especially for the EEs, so those have to be done in at least 2K (Digital Intermediate resolution) to match the rest of the footage. But I would like to think they had the common sense to do just that.

It's going to be sooner than 2012. Don't let the negativity discourage you.

Maybe there wont be a true EE. Maybe the EE release will include branching so u can watch either version.

I don't see why the studio can't give us both version via seamless branching like they did with King Kong. Two version in one disc will satisfied all LOTR fans. And give us all the special features on a second or third discs.
