I gotta say that I could have done without the 48 and 24fps versions on this film (saw the former last week at a screening and the latter last night at an IMAX theater near my house). I think it would have been more than fine if Jackson just shot them in 2D and called it a day. Of course, that would lower the overall grosses quite a bit but creatively, the film really didn't need it.

As for the movie itself, it's a good three star movie. The pacing was off in the first half but it picked up in the second half. Martin Freeman was great as Bilbo and the sequence with Gollum was the high point of the film. And while it zipped right by for a 169-minute movie, it could have easily lost 25 minutes.

I might just pick up the theatrical version of this for blu-ray. The theatrical edition was slow enough. I loved it but I don't see how extra scenes will benefit this without feeling overstuffed.

Despite my criticism of the pacing and length of the theatrical, I will end up getting both. Damn you Jackson and your excellent supplemental sections!

Arwen meeting the Aragorn and the hobbits outside Rivendell/Imladris??? Please.....) and did it with The Hobbit. I guess if you're someone who could actually speak broken elvish (Sindarin more so than Quenyan), you're bound to be picky .

Edit....I should expand on this. PJ did bring in a lot of relevant outside material (White Council, Thror, etc.) and I appreciated it, but
[Show spoiler]Azog "was" killed and it was in the battle of Azanulbizar by Son of Nain, Dain Iron Foot.....Thorin was mortally wounded by a warg????....how gollum lost the ring???.....and so on....

All that being said, I really liked it. I just had to keep telling myself "it's not the book....it's not the book....it's....." Quite entertaining and the time just flew by.

One thing I noticed is that there was a sort of blurring during scenes where there was a lot of motion. I don't know if it was the filming or the projection. It reminded me of watching cable 3D at home as opposed to blu ray 3D. The blu ray (frame packing) is way, way better at handling motion. That sort of surprised me because I saw it in HFR 3D. In any case, this is a no-brainer first day buy/watch for me at home.

Maybe I should name our Home Theater "Hill of Dark Sorcery" (Dol Guldur) or maybe I'll just admit that I shouldn't have read my English/Elvish dictionary as much as I did.

Namaarie
Rave 18, Nice theater to go to. Never been to their Imax tho

I'm torn between going to see this on a frs 3D (non IMAX) or a real IMAX 3D screen. I'm really interested to see what 48fps looks like but I'm still in awe every time I see a movie on a screen as big as 70mm IMAX is.

I don't really see the point in seeing a 70mm blowup of a film mastered in 2K resolution, personally. If you sit at a distance where you really get a sense of the screen's size, it's going to look blurry and messy.

I didn't think about that. Thanks for pointing that out.

Saw it at imax thursday night. Had no idea they would be handing packages of small posters. Saw it in 24fps3D. I didn't really get dizzy but my eyes were bothering the heck out of me. Good film though just would rather see it in 2D

They have some really great deals if you can get there before noon or on Tuesdays. On Tuesdays, all movies (surcharge for 3d and IMAX) are $7 and they pick up parking. Movies before 12 noon are $7 daily.

That being said, they just closed the UA in the Marina and remodeled the AMC there too. I miss those funky little theaters. Everything is going upscale. Don't get me wrong, I like nice theaters, but I also like something that's a little bit lived in.

Edit - The IMAX is "huge" (it's like 60 some feet high). I sit in the 3rd or 4th row and love it. I picked up my ticket to The Hobbit for $12 (9am showing). Not a bad deal IMO.

No big budget film is going to be mastered at 2K resolution in this era. We're a long way from LOTR's post-production being handled at 1080p.

Oh ok, ive been to the rave only for Special Screenings but the seats where comfortable and if i remember correctly had leather...the theaters i usually go to arent like that. and rave even has a bar!! that was actually the first time i had seen that.

Yea, i heard about that. I had gotten invited to a screening at that AMC( i think it was that one) they were trying out their new service with employees going to ask for you order and everthing even serving beer inside the theater while watching the movie. I was able to choose a free movie from their list to see for that day.

Is the IMAX as big as the Universal Citywalk Imax??

I like this movie pretty good. Saw it last night with some friends. The tone was more light-hearted than the Lord of the Rings movies, so I had to keep reminding myself that that was intentional.

I will be buying this as soon as it hits shelves.

IMDB (not a place for the most accurate news, but...) lists the DI at 2K. However, the film was shot at 5K, on the Red, so I would assume that logic dictates they'd master it at at least 4K... unless they are stupid.

I have a question,

Can you combine the movie cash for 1 ticket??

i have 3, me and wife are going so that's 10 bucks off already just wondering if i could use that 3rd movie ticket money to add it up to 15 off on both tickets??

tickets are 10 for the 48fps so it's 20 total but wondering if i could combine all three and just pay 5

Sorry to break the news to you, but 2K is still the predominant resolution for film mastering, especially for effects-heavy films.
It's not a matter of being "stupid", it's a matter of time and cost. Doing digital FX at 4K is still prohibitively expensive, especially when you have twice (make that 4 times, since its 3D) as many frames to work with.
