If there is one company that will deliver, it's Synapse

Yeah, I'm not trying to knock on them, they clearly are aware those last transfers were not the best and tried to get access to better materials, it just looks like they got blocked. The Suspiria masters for the last blu-rays are REALLY bad (the anchor bay dvd is still the best it's looked) so I sure hope they don't get similarly shut down there.

I'm not on Facebook, but I wish I could let him know that the Wild Side master for Tenebrae seems fine IMO. Sure, could be better like he's said, but I wouldn't think it would turn people off. Now Phenomena....the Arrow BD was a mess, but I'm not sure if that was from the Wild Side master or not.

Too bad that the Anchor Bay DVD looks terrible on a large screen.

Some more Tenebrae / Phenomena details:

Well, unless someone else has an uncut 35mm IP or original negative laying around in the USA, there's not much hope of getting access to something else. A theatrical print would be dense, grainy, yellow and horrid. What we have is the lesser of two evils, for sure.

Yes, we have. Our master CAME from them. According to the licensor, they never kept the original raw scan materials. This boggles my mind. The other master they have is the grainy, pixelated one from LVR that was released from Arrow first. Both transfers have huge issues. Onward and upward, as they say...

I agree that the Wild Side master of TENEBRAE mostly looks great. The major issue is some aggressive automated dirt/scratch removal artifacts. The worst of these is when Peter Neil is ripping open the second letter from the killer, but it pops up in other places too (for example, after
[Show spoiler]the arm amputation, as Jane is backing up into the little cubby area and turns around facing the killer, her nostrils keep disappearing during the shot! Go through it frame-by-frame you'll see what I mean
). Synapse is trying to correct these as best they can, and is also trying to get the English-language insert shots.

Unless something goes seriously awry, Synapse have stated they'll be doing a new 2K scan from the negative for Suspiria, working with a Technicolor lab.

Worst case scenario, if they are stuck with the extremely problematic current master, they'll likely at least color correct it properly and consistently and tone down some of the hot contrast in parts.

I have the UK BD and prefer that over AB's DVD, personally, just because of the higher detail; but certainly the DVD has better and more consistent color timing and contrast.

As for Tenebrae, I think the Wild Side master looks great, I just hope Synapse fix up all the DNR errors and such that were on the French disc. A new master would be excellent, but I'm perfectly pleased with what exists and it's definitely leaps and bounds better than LVR's master.

Phenomena, I think only one HD master exists, and Arrow's disc is pretty good. If Synapse can get their hands on a pre-DNR'd version, I'm sure it'll look great.

[Show spoiler]killer monkey. Which is funny, as there is an episode of Monk that revolves around a murder that implicates a monkey. There is a scene (like in Phenomena) where the monkey is wielding a knife after supposedly murdering someone in a panic room.
I wonder if it was a slight nod or homage to Argento?
That would be more of an Edgar Allan Poe homage.

I saw them in Boston a few months ago and was absolutely blown away! So much better than I ever hoped it would be. I got shivers several times, especially when they did the Suspiria theme!

If you are a fan, or even have a casual interest in prop rock and/or movies that they have scored, I strongly recommend checking them out if they are playing near you. You will not be disappointed!

Does anyone know if Claudio is touring with them this time? I didn't go when they played CT because I heard he left the band.

Agreed! They did a show here in Vancouver and it was awesome.
Also managed to get Claudio Simonetti and Massimo Mosante to sign my 3 disc of Suspiria and my blu ray edition of Deep Red.
That was a good night!

I saw them play 2 shows in Austin at the Housecore Horror Film Fest last October. One was a traditional set of "hits" and the other was performing a live score along to a screening of Suspiria. One of the single best movie/music events of my life!

I must have missed this! But I just looked and it looks like Claudio indeed is NOT with them anymore (and he's performing over in Europe as "Claudio Simonetti's Goblin." Looks like the October tour we saw them on was the last for Simonetti...

Though also note that now Fabio Pignatelli and Agostino Marangolo (original members not on the October tour) are back in the band. Confusing.

That is unfortunate since Claudio is the one with the most personality. I heard about his departure when I was at an Italian horror film fest in Providence shortly after the Boston gig. One of the guys running the fest claimed to know Claudio and said there was a lot or arguing between bandmates backstage at the Boston gig and Claudio decided to leave the tour. It sucks because I would really like to meet him and get his autograph. Hopefully his version of Goblin will come to the US at some point.

Didn't Arrow JUST remaster Tenebrae? Here: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Tenebrae-Blu-ray/86080/

What source, or transfer did they use?

The same Wild Side master that Synapse is using, which was previously used for the French Blu-ray. Synapse is correcting some DVNR artifacts for their version, though, that snuck into the Wild Side and Arrow Blus.

Thanks for the info. Have you had a chance to compare the new Arrow disc versus the French? Is the compression better on one than the other? Clean up? Soundtrack? Or are they both pretty much identical?

The Austrian and French transfers appear to be nigh identical, so I'm going to hazard a guess that the Arrow transfer looks similar. No idea if any of them fix the DNR flubs like this:

http://www.landofwhimsy.com/hdcaptures/tenebre19.jpg

The Austrian disc has a 128kbps English track, which is absurd.

Once more for the fun of it, here's the Wild Side vs. (initial) Arrow comparison. Really makes ya wish LVR never scanned a movie again, doesn't it?

I've only seen the French Blu-ray, not the new Arrow Steelbook. Aside from the DNR artifacts that have been noted, the French Blu-ray looks really good IMO, and also sounds really good via the original English mono mix. It does have non-removable French subtitles, however. If Synapse corrects the DNR artifacts as they plan to, it should be the best version of TENEBRAE in the world when it's released. Hopefully they can track down a high-quality source for an HD transfer of the English-language inserts, as well.

Chris

Jeez, could they have picked a scarier venue to play at near me? Doubt it.

Oh well, I'm going anyway.
