It seems to be a very NA Anime Company thing to do that.

Of all the sets that I've picked up over the years only the ones from Bandai and Aniplex have reasonable amounts of episodes on discs (Reasonable being 3-5, depending on the series) My Funimation and Viz sets (I don't own anything from Sentai) all skirt the line of 7-9, again depending on the series and the video quality typically suffers for it.

Chances are if we get the set in the US we'll get it either split into two parts or it'll probably be $100+ MSRP for the entire series going by Bebop's example and the movies will be split off from the series, and they'll cram 7-8 episodes on a disc to make it a nice 4 disc BD set with 5 DVDs included as well (And the DVDs will just be the same video as the BDs, no original broadcast version here, or Death/Death(True) for that matter). The only thing I really need out of this is the movies since the Manga DVD I have is disgustingly compressed, the old Platinum Thinpak set I have still looks nice but if the BDs are amazing I might just have to go for it.

Had to make a new account at Amazon (it's been years since I've used it) but ordered.

I wish Amazon.jp was lumped in with the rest of them.

Are you sure it's not? I'm almost certain it is, or at least was. I shop at Amazon.jp frequently and I only ever set up one account when I first bought from Amazon.com and later .uk.

I'm hoping this box has some level of English support but I'm not expecting it to as Star Child/King Records don't tend to do that (off the top of my head I can only think of Nanoha having subs). Mainly because I'd like to buy this and just not deal with a shoddy Funimation release, I mean they're picking up their game a little and this is a huge title (but so was Steins Gate and Psycho Pass...) but I'm perfectly happy just importing the set. Considering doing that with Noir too but I've decided to wait and see on that one.

I actually was not a fan of Neon Genesis Evangelion, but was a fan of the Rebuild films. I own the Platinum series twice on DVD (didn't mean to buy it twice, got it in a blind box after already owning it) but I've decided now that my tastes have developed a bit further and I can better appreciate the complexities than I could when I was 10 I'm ready to give the series another shot and a Blu-Ray upgrade is the perfect excuse to do so!
Funny that for someone who used to always loudly proclaim "Evangelion wasn't that good!" I still have the JP BDs, AUS BDs and DVDs of the Rebuilds, own the series twice and all the OSTs...

Amazon JP is the only Amazon site you have to have a separate account to access. Every other Amazon site uses the same login.

This series was released on VHS, LD, and on DVD twice, and they still get to charge this much for the BD iteration? Haha, not that I'm surprised, but I was hoping for a slightly lower price point. But I'll probably get this anyway....

As far as most prices go I'd say it's really not that bad.

Well to be fair this contains pretty much everything. Selling currently around 41,000yen with Amazon discount is pretty good by Japanese market standards. I mean for example the new Penguindrum set sells at about 30,000yen last I checked and that's ONLY the series and a CD.
Considering this contains a new telecine which I'd imagine would cost more than a half-assed upscale of a major property all combined in one set instead of having to collect bits and pieces to get the whole franchise I'd say we're doing well for price.

I can seriously imagine them trying to sell this at 80,000yen and people buying it.

EDIT: Was on Amazon today and turns out I'd been looking at the Amazon exclusive. It's like 30,000yen without the store bonus, I really hope we get more specs soon because 30,000 yen with even slight English support is a definite buy. 30,000yen without is perhaps reserved for things I like a bit more. That's pretty cheap all things considered.

Didn't want to make a new thread for it but did anybody see the CGI short yet? It looks amazing.

Yeah, I understand what you guys are saying. Again, I'm not surprised, and I know that it's not bad in comparison to the rest of the market. I'm more just expressing the disbelief that Japan can continue charging so much for home media in general. I mean even CDs. A 1-disc CD album is still going for 3000 yen.

I just noticed the non-exclusive discounted to 30,000yen as well. That definitely isn't too bad. As a general trend, I notice that the Amazon exclusives tend to not get discounted too much, and usually whatever goodies are included are not worth the price different. Might just put in a pre-order for the non-exclusive.

It's because Japan still uses rental pricing structures for their media.

With shipping to the US, non-Amazon Exclusive NGE box of the complete series and the movies should come out to about $250 or so. I'm in.

It looks like I'm finally going to learn how to burn my own Blu-rays with subtitles in the mean time.

Oh man, subtitling a movie yourself with some fansubs would be ok - but trying to sync up the subs for a full season or more of anime is something I don't think I would even want to attempt... By the time you've reworked and reworked the subtitle timings for each episode, you'll be so sick of viewing the anime you'll never want to watch it again...

Ordinarily I would agree with you, but it's Evangelion, so...

Somebody wrote about burning Blu-rays with added subs on the forum a year or two ago, remember who it was? Which thread? Anybody?

You or Sinthetic ever post a guide or FAQ about the process? Or know of any good one written by somebody else? I have been curious about it for some time, and with this set I am finally ready and willing to take the plunge rather than rolling the dice with the eventual American version.

As someone who just bought a BD burner drive, the DIY subs topic interests me greatly.

Also, do we know what the difference is between the regular and Amazon exclusive editions are? Depending on the loss of content I just might downgrade my preorder.

It's probably just a clear file set or maybe a wall scroll I really can't imagine what else it'd be. I especially can't imagine anything it would be that would warrant $100+ for a store bonus (granted that's subjective to how much you like the series, I mean I went and got most of the store bonus tapestries for the first Madoka Magica film set). Although saying that for something older like Evangelion I could imagine it being like a storyboard booklet or reproduced cel copies or something.

Checking back, looks like I did preorder the regular edition, and for now the Amazon.jp exclusive states its bonuses are TBD.

Edit: Is it just me or is the price on this thing fluctuating like crazy? I ordered it at ¥38,000. My order details show it at ¥28,242. And the item page is showing ¥30,501. I figure this might just be price guarantee, but it seems like a pretty drastic shift.
