Default True Blu!!!

I'm 100% Blu unless Blu ray fails completely. There are plenty of movies on Universal that I want but I won't buy HD DVD unless it wins the format war.

I thought I read some where that the choice has already been made and that there is no choice, effective Feb. 2009 the FCC will drop all but its HD signals and everyone in the US will have to upgrade to HD or purchase decoders to view the HD signals on their non-HD sets.

That's the plan, we'll see how it goes. There are still millions of households with only Standard Def and many don't want to upgrade. I'm sure either the decoders or whatever will be very cheap or given free somehow...we'll see I guess.

The FCC is mandating digital broadcasting, not high-definition broadcasting. Digital-to-analog set-top converters for over-the-air transmissions will be subsidized.

Quote:
What About My Analog TV? Will It Still Work?

After February 17, 2009, you will be able to receive and view over-the-air digital programming with an analog TV only by purchasing a digital-to-analog set-top converter box. Between January 1, 2008, and March 31, 2009, all U.S. households will be able to request up to two coupons, worth $40 each, to be used toward the future purchase of eligible digital-to-analog converter boxes. Eligible converter boxes are for the conversion of over-the-air digital television signals, and therefore are not intended for analog TVs connected to a paid provider such as cable or satellite TV service.
Viewers with analog sets who subscribe to cable or satellite will have to get any necessary equipment from their content provider.

Check out the FCC's page on the digital broadcast changeover here.

Well while the purple folk may enjoy both formats and say i alone won't change anything-and thats true-it's the sheer amount of possible purple's that are partically responsible for dragging out the format war...but i guess i'm used to waiting for the best stuff to arrive. When lotr theatrical hit dvd i knew the extended ed. was 6 months away so to me the non extended ed didn't exsist.
Also back on dvd anything sony released i wouldn't touch until the superbit ed.
so yeah waiting for the movies to arrive on blu is no problem...if i really need it
i'll grab the wde sd dvd for cheap then get the blu later.

Microsoft and toshiba's ego's are what keeps hd-dvd going but without a single purple person out there i doubt that'd be enough and it'd be a wrap around 12
months sooner.

Just curious, here, but I'd like to look at the numbers. HD DVD accounts for what.. 27% of HDMs in North America? Less than that in Europe? Of everyone that enjoys High def movies only somewhere between 5 and 7% are format neutral?( I'm guessing this number based on some polls I remember seeing, this isn't meant to be hard facts. Actually I'm really curious about seeing some hard data here.)

How many format neutral people can there be out there? Can we really be making any kind of significant impact on the market at large? Frankly I think Blu-Ray's victory is in the bag. But that doesn't stop me from watching what I want when I want it.

Can anyone back up with some hard numbers how my decision to be neutral is actually affecting you? Are there really that many of us to be a threat? If there are that many of us, then why isn't the market targeting us more?

Educate me. I don't want High def movies to die any more than you do.

I disagree. Even if the total number of neutral "purples" is affecting the outcome of the format war (which I seriously doubt), any one individual consumer has absolutely NO CONTROL over all the "purples" as a group.

Again, think of the prisoner's dilemma.

That being the case, there is no PRACTICAL reason for any one of us to boycott one format or another. If you are a movie-lover and high-def lover, IMO it's a no-brainer to have and enjoy both formats.

I can only afford one format....so I took the high road and put my money into the wise investment of Blu-ray.

Blu-Ray Only!

It is the superior technology not only for movies, but also next generation storage for data, games etc. The technical specifications of Blu-Ray have always been more impressive to me vs. HD-DVD.

HD-DVD just seems half-baked in comparison.

Although I am not a big fan of the DRM on Blu-Ray, everything else considered I think it is the technologically superior format of the two and it has my exclusive support!
