Only if they always used the center of the frame for the original 4:3 version.

If they filmed in widescreen, but had to air for 4:3, I don't think they would/could justify the extra work when they could just hard crop it by using the center of the frame. I could be wrong though.

Cool

The Shield is my all time favorite TV show, I'm chomping at the bit for this release.

I had been revisiting the show recently, not having seen it in quite some time since it's original running on FX. I watched the first two seasons available on Crackle presented in 16:9 and framing seemed to fit quite naturally. Bought a Hulu gift card just so I can stream the remaining seasons. I'd wait for the 4K remaster but the lack of details means it could be months or years waiting...

I started watching season 3 through Hulu and it's 4:3 and it's quite jarring and cramped feeling with many characters heads or bodies half clipped in the framing compared to the rather complete composition of having viewed season 1 and 2 in 16:9.

A little background on the tech specs of the show was the cameras used Super 16mm which has an exposure area with an ratio approximately 1.68, very close to 16:9 if you crop a small bit top and bottom. Going with center framed crop to 4:3 drops a considerable bit from each side, but that appears to be the method utilized to present in 4:3.

I have not watched the show since it originally aired, even though I bought the DVD box set when it was on sale for $20 at Best Buy which I will probably sell and just wait it out for the Blu-ray box set so it feels as if I am watching for the first time, but depending on price, I may even wait a bit longer for it to come down as I suspect it may be an expensive release when it first comes out.

Anyone wanna bet the standard BDs would somehow end up being in the Choice BD-R line?

I mention this because with some of the bizarre decisions the big names are coming up nowadays, it wouldn't surprise me.

The Hulu rights are expiring on the show in one week. Makes you wonder if they were shooting for a new streaming contract with HD masters.

My point was a new streaming contract was due and they would be likely to surface on one provider or another, there's been no confirmation of blu-ray releases, and the way major rights holders view BD these days, it's probably the least of their concern. BD set sales would probably be a drop in the bucket compared to streaming and other syndication options with new HD masters.

Yeah there had been confirmation of this getting a bluray release. They said they was planning to release The complete Series on bluray sometime in 217 when they was done with the 4K scan.

I think initially the plan was to have the Blu-ray set out in time for the anniversary next month but I believe Ryan posted that they were pushing for a release "sometime later in 2017" so hopefully we see it by year's end. I don't mind waiting if more time is needed to make sure its done right.

Late 2017, early 2018. I don't think we will ever see 4K blu, but I think I can settle for 1080p on this one.

Shawn is tweeting again, for the anniversary:

@ShawnRyanTV For the 4K remaster, will we be getting a Bluray release? I own all 7 seasons on DVD but want BR too!

Quote:
I'm going to oversee 4K conversion process for Sony. Exactly how they release/monetize will be up them. (1/2)

Quote:
My hope though is that remaster will be attractive to major streaming sites and that we'll get bluray release. (2/2)
Quote:
Also... International version of Finale Ep has been avail on streaming sites. True original version of Finale will be part of remaster.
Quote:
We had to turn it into a 2 parter for International as our FX was too long. So it has done added material but isn't as I want it.
Quote:
If it says Family Meeting Part 1 and Family Meeting Part 2 as two separate eps, you're watching the International cut, not original FX one.

LOL, well they've already messed it up by not using OAR and cropping it to widescreen. But otherwise, yeah.
