Even with LD and VHS

Yeah you don't have to worry about that with Universal. They're weird though. Their new releases are reference but catalogue titles are garbage. I don't get that strategy.

Even if you are wrong it's not like this is some new practice to not take full advantage of a format in the later years. Could be purposely or some studios feel money is better spent focusing on new tech. Who really knows, but it has happened in the past.

I watched a 10 minute preview of The Martian on Verizon Fios, colors looked fine to me, the shots on Mars were especially vibrant. I didn't see this in the theaters so i don't have anything to compare it to like you.

The 1080p stream color timing is similar to what i saw on Verizon Fios. It does look duller compared to the trailer.

Do you have more comparisons?

I know what you said but mike, I just don’t like to see accusations thrown about without proof, first….and for that matter, valid and complete proof.

Plus, breaks my heart if you turn out to be right.

1080p streaming version

DCP trailer

They are direct grabs not photos.

I didn't think the Martian was quite that muted in colour in the cinema, and it looked more like the more colourful image

Trailers and final DCPs are usually very different, aren't they?

I remember a similar discussion about The Dark Knight Rises. The trailer color-grading was way "cooler" than the final DCP and Blu-ray...

Indeed as I stated above, but the dark knight also had the IMAX preview that looked similar.
Then real test is how the HDR version looks compared to the others

Well, HDR is supposed to be different because that's the point of it. The real comparison should be DCP vs Blu-ray as both don't use the HDR Master...

I don't want to think that Fox is trying to kill Blu-ray quality BEFORE the new format is actually on the market... It wouldn't make any sense...

What do you think of those pics, mike? Do you get the same impression of muted colors?
