They do mention that they specifically worked in the P3 colour space all the way through the chain, as most of the time the images as viewed on-set are piped out in Rec.709 (called "somewhat crude" by DP Jess Hall) with a basic correction LUT, which is then expanded upon in post. But here they designed the colour palette of the film to be read by the camera and to be presented as such, so on-set monitoring and the viewing of dailies were all done in proper P3 with "little or no colour correction required" during the DI grade itself. So, even with the 2K master the Alexa 65's gorgeous imagery will still shine through on UHD and the colour should be eye-poppingly lush. We shall see.... |

And they were still finishing VFX two weeks before release. Some of the extended clips right before release even had the Major all-black in some shots. ![]() Doubt they'd put in or even have the time to render the movie in all the necessary 4K and 2K formats for theaters, let alone the master. |

I haven't seen either of them, are they very VFX heavy? I've noticed many VFX-"light" movies more often than not are done in 4K. The new Transformers and Star Wars being very notable exceptions, along with almost everything Sony.

IMAX Laser is a 4K projection by default, that's not to say that the source is always 4K. And HDD's info comes from where, exactly? Just because they say it's true doesn't make it so, this thread on film tech tells its own tale (scroll to about halfway down): http://www.film-tech.com/cgi-bin/ubb...1;t=011934;p=1

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I figure with all the rumors of Disney collecting 4K remasters of the original trilogy, with Rogue One being 4K, and Disney re-rendering the animated Star Wars shows at 3K then upscaling to 4K, that Force Awakens is probably 4K too. 4K all the Star Wars things! |

Oh, I'm pretty sure I watched an interview on this VERY recently but I can't find it and the only thing I can find is the "rumor" of them doing it in 2014. I don't have Netflix 4K so I can't verify, and search results are plagued with rumors about restorations of the original trilogy in 4K.
