Yeah, this week's Stand By Me 4K UHD from Sony also had an English-only slipcover, the same one the US got (Canadian ratings logos and whatnot are pretty standard on a lot of US releases, as they get sold on both sides of the border).

No idea why Disney is suddenly on this bilingual train. If the ultimate goal is to save money, surely it would be even cheaper not to even print a separate slipcover for Canada and just sell the exact same thing in both countries. If studios like Sony and WB can get away with it, why not them? The important thing is having French language and/or subtitle tracks as an option on the disc itself, not cluttered up artwork.

It's a pain in the butt. Yet, recent Warner Bros. releases like Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Detective Pikachu are English only. Here's to hoping the 4K release of The Shining is the same. Had to buy Batman, Batman Returns, and Avengers: Endgame from U.S. sellers to avoid the bilingual packaging.

Really?

Maybe they should do the same in the Netherlands, Belgium or even in France, where the covers are bilingual or trilingual... (Oh, and New-Brunswick is also a bilingual province.)

Because there are no laws dictating that you can't sell with French on the cover, but there are laws that state you can't sell without it.

Are you new to this country?

Netherlands, Belgium, and France tend to choose a language (either one or the other) and stick with it for the title on the cover. Titles like The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast tend to be translated to French and only have the French title on the cover (which is honestly preferable to squeezing in English beside it), but others like Toy Story and Cars seem to remain as they are.

, ,

Not even France made them change the Cars logo and squeeze two languages in, which is an abomination. I guess these other French-speaking places are confident enough that they don't need to pass draconian laws to make their presence felt. Quebec likes to stomp its feet to try and make the rest of Canada pay attention, even though nobody's interested. All Quebec's doing is hastening the death of physical media in Canada by making it more difficult for studios to sell their products here, and that's unforgivable.

I'll be honest I thought I was looking at a joke when I first saw the cover for Toy Story 4's blu-ray/4K release. Like I actually laughed out loud and said 'that cannot actually be the cover'.

I mean it CLEARLY looks like the French logo is front and centre. Yes, I realize looking at it closer the Disney/PIXAR is over both meaning the English only one has a slightly off-centre logo on its own but this is just hilariously ugly and makes it look like it's a French version with English conveniently included. What a total tragedy.

Have it in French or have it in English. Bilingual covers make Jesus cry.

Couldn't they just do reverse covers with one side English & the other in French?

Nope, the bilingual law require at least the title should be in bilingual on the English part or just French. So we can’t grt away with English only/French only sides.

France has biligual covers for live action movies, since 2016 I think...

For reverse covers, Alliance (now Seville) uses (or used, I'm not sure) them. I don't see why Disney could not.

Anyway, living in Quebec, I'm used to bilingual covers since 2001 for Disney...

Yes. Bilingual covers have been around for years, but it won’t solve the problem as the English side that’s being shown at the stores should still have French.

Are you looking for 3D, regular, or 4K?

On release day for Detective Pikachu and the new Godzilla movie we got the US releases for the regular and 4K releases (the back even advertises Movies Anywhere and we don't have that service in Canada). For the 3D releases we still got a Canadian release with French writing.

Seriously though, IMO French speaking Europe is not a problem because there is no danger of English becoming the national language. In Quebec, I could see some people's uneasiness of English language's penetration and they are fighting to retain and promote the use of French language.

That's perfectly fine with me. English language is a globally spoken language, especially in business, therefore the proliferation of English in one's culture could seem threatening.

The issue is still about the movie cover and how the cover looks right?

Sacre bleu!

I just got my email this morning about Toy Story 4 being the featured title. Holy cow is the bilingual cover ugly. Usually I find bilingual covers to simply be too busy, but this one is almost offensive.

I know, it's honestly a tragedy. The French logo is quite literally front and centre, and because the English words are so small in comparison it looks like it's pushed off to the side as an afterthought.
