I'm all for supporting human rights but then a separate thread or section dedicated to political discussions should be created.

You joke, but I know 2 people from Hong Kong who moved to Singapore instead because "brexit". I'll bet HKers who move will go either there, Taiwan or Australia.

Even though it was a rubbish bit of satire, that doesn't surprise me one bit - a mate of mine is Italian (though moved here with his parents when he was still a baby) and his wife is Polish, and the UK is currently a political laughing stock in both countries. As my mate's wife (I reiterate - she is Polish) very succinctly put it - "you know your country is f'ed when the Polish go back home".

Similar to the "what do you want to see released by 88 and Eureka next (HK film related)" thread, they just shove it to an area of the forum that sees almost no traffic. I think the brilliance of talking about this in this section is that we can still talk about this amazing release coming up, but still be understanding of the political issues that continue to plague our societies. I, for one, am happy with the interjection of politics every so often as it highlights our love for not only the movies that 88/Eureka are bringing out, but also to the culture it represents.

In regards to Tam and him being mainly a popstar only (vs a mix of the two), I always felt that it was because his acting was mediocre, at best. Leslie, in my opinion, could have been an actor, alone, he was so proficient.

Either way, super excited for this release and the lot of you who are so engaged in discussion about it, and other things.

Oh, absolutely - Leslie Cheung was an absolute beast when it came to versatility, he really could do anything. Even in his last film Inner Senses (which, I think, is very derivative and quite mediocre) you can't take your eyes off him despite the material being quite weak. He really did put his all into every performance. I think of all the HK actors around during the golden 80-90s period that are no longer with us, Leslie's probs at the top of my list.

Unfortunately, without one of y’all pointing to resources where we could help otherwise, we don’t have much of a dog in the Brit-HK end of the discussion beyond a bystander’s eyes and ears. I do hope to be proven wrong on this in some manner.

From all I’ve ever gathered from observing attempts to quell political discussion on film, I think a lot of it might be an age thing. I’m pretty young compared to the expected demographic for a lot of these types of releases — I was less than a year old when Rumble In The Bronx came out, so I sit right between millennial and zoomer — and the generation I identify with is far more open with acknowledging and reacting to political standings of another entity than I’ve known prior generations to typically be.
As mentioned above you can contact your local MP (we only got so far with the BNO campaign through signatures and petitions, which I did my bit to share) and voice support on social media for Hong Kongers moving to the UK under the current scheme. There's a fundraiser too. There's many figures worth following on Twitter too from Melissa Chan and Jingan Young to Hong Kong Hermit (who also has a pinned post of journalists in the city). I wish some of these figures were used on Blu Rays personally, although I'm not holding my breath. Hong Kong Free Press is brilliant.

You can also voice your support for those who are imprisoned, of course, and you can certainly act responsibly when engaging with those on Hong Kong film forums, such as this thread, and elsewhere, who insist they have no political interest in the city or share views that are abhorrent and authoritarian. Whether you like Armor of God or not, whether you regard it as political or not, viewing Hong Kong as a proverbial Black and White Minstrel Show (as I said above, a kung fu film stuck in 1980), lost to time, is most disheartening.

I don't know if I'd ever have visited Hong Kong so much let alone become invested in the city were it not for the films that entertained me so much in my teenage years.

I'd take Taiwan, SG or Australia over the UK too!

My translator and I sometimes discuss Hong Kong (having read and watched stuff), even joining him at an event to show my support.

I wonder if the English version in Japan was prepared first and someone made another edit with a different end song which was then syndicated abroad?

What is the Japanese LD like? Does it have English credits (mentioning Jadran Films)?

I'm assuming the former, but it's definitely been a cash cow for them so it just seems smart to put out all they can get their hands on. That, coupled with the fact we have diehard HK cinema fans working on it, just means to me I will be more than happy to throw wads of cash at it.

maybe I missed this, but is there an availability date for this yet? Don't see any preorders - on 88's site or anywhere else...

Not yet - 88 often announce things officially/send out not-so subtle teases WAY before they're ready, whilst most other labels don't announce until they have the product pretty much finished. With the other Jackie releases, for example, they've announced the release before they have any art work or full technical specs.

On the plus side that has given some of the fantastic dedicated fans here the chance to contribute well in advance of the scheduled release date.

Oh yeah, it's definitely a good thing - the level of engagement with some of the contributors to 88's releases on the forum is fantastic. Many audio options and extras have been sourced through these very boards.

I agree and one of the main reasons I hope 88 films continues to get more Hong Kong classics. I wish other companies opened their doors to accept the level of involvement they have, it's made them one of the most fan-focused labels out there.

88 Films rocketed to the top of my ‘favourite label’ list ever since they announced their first JC titles - even before they struck absolute gold with the combination of Kung Fu Bob art & rabid/knowledgable fan contributions.
