Disaster has befallen me. My recorded programmes on the Virgin box from Forces TV are no longer available as I am "locked out". So I've lost the chance to see Spencer for Hire and Midnight Caller which I had been keeping for a "rainy day". Spenser is, I know, available on Region 1. Midnight Caller is likely never to get to DVD due to music rights. I should have kept my viewing up to date - my fault - but still a disappointment.

I'm not an expert on this, but as it was a Warner Archive Collection release, their DVD releases of Spenser: for Hire may be Region 0, meaning they should play on a UK DVD player (they don't specify the region code on the rear boxart of WAC DVD releases). If the show had been released in the States on DVD by the main Warner Brothers physical media label, it usually states Region 1 on the rear boxart.

I lost a repeat of an edition of TOTP from 1979 (presented by Mike Read) when the Sky box was changed, so I know what it's like when you lose a TV recording/TV recordings you've wanted to keep. And there are never enough hours in the day sometimes.

United Kingdom Tutti Frutti and other BBC4 Drama reruns

I've noted that for a number of weeks BBC4 has been rerunning well known dramas weekly (as part of the 100th anniversary no doubt).

This week just past they have rerun Wolf Hall.

Next week from Monday to Wednesday they are rerunning the classic Tutti Frutti with the late great Robbie Coltrane, with special tribute documentaries beforehand on the Monday.

The New Year's week is a rerun of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy with Alec Guinness.

Definitely worth keeping an eye out for future classics if they continue.

In one way I've been slacking a bit with keeping threads in UK TV Shows updated the past week or two (I fell behind with updating threads elsewhere on the forum last week and this week (putting unnecessary mental pressure on myself), but I have deliberately kept back some things to post as it's good to always have something to post about instead of getting everything done (still got a couple of Hawaii Five-O mini-reviews/reviews to do in DVD Movies as well).

I did spot Tutti Frutti in the Christmas and New Year double issue cutback, and a repeat airing of another One Foot in the Grave Christmas special (I still haven't seen the last series or two, but I wish BBC Four would repeat my favourite episode The Beast in the Cage).

United Kingdom Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Season Four

Checked the section on Sky's On Demand service for Alfred Hitchcock Presents earlier, and before the season 4 premiere "Poison" had aired on Sky Arts, all of the fourth season was available to download. However...the last three episodes of the season are under a Season 5 tab (thirty-nine episodes in total in the fourth season). But in the episode synopsis information it states all three episodes are from the fourth season).

For a very short space of time, I thought Season 5 was available to download as well, until I spotted the error.

I do hope next year, either Universal themselves or a boutique label licensing from them can do a Blu-ray release of the show.

Default The Twilight Zone - The Original Series!!! Starts 1 January!

*Cue creepy music*
*talks out of side of mouth*
There is a UK Legend channel, beyond that which is known to man.
Which is opening the door to another dimension on Sunday 1 January at 8.30pm, with episodes showing on the following Saturday and Sunday at the same time (and presumably every weekend thereafter).

Be sure to take a wrong turn, and enter.........
The Twilight Zone.

Didn't spot this cutback (well spotted and a nice introduction like the Alfred Hitchcock Presents posts for example ). I mainly check Legend's listings on Sky TV for Monday to Friday (for Knight Rider, Walker, Texas Ranger and some films which interested me in Legend Lowdown at the start of the month) more than Saturday and Sunday's listings.

I'll (hopefully) be updating the Legend Lowdown thread at the start of next week (each new edition is first shown on the first day of each month).

United Kingdom Alfred Hitchcock Presents' repeat run on Sky Arts

Sky Arts's repeat run of the fourth season of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, based on it comprising of 39 episodes, should end on Wednesday 18th January, 2023 with the second of the two episodes being repeated that day. Am hoping Sky Arts move onto the fifth season the following day, but I wouldn't be surprised if they go back to the beginning of the third season (like what happened after they got to the end of the second season (they went back to the beginning of the first season, repeating the first two seasons two or three times before they started on the third season).

Season 4 only ran to 36 episodes for some reason, and they also now run new episodes at weekends.
My Virgin crystal ball tells me that season 5 starts at 6pm on Monday 16th .

PS If anyone missed the run of Return of the Saint on the much missed Forces TV, there is a second chance as it is starting on Monday 9th at 11pm on Great TV (after the daily run of Randall and Hopkirk and The Persuaders.

Usually, if I've made a error/mistake in a post in a thread I'm updating (with updating several threads weekly etc. there is bound to be a mistake etc. No one is perfect (I try to do my best and hope the posts are helpful and a good reminder etc.), I correct my mistake before someone points it out and corrects me. Thanks for correcting me about the actual total number of episodes in Alfred Hitchcock Presents's fourth season, and stating that Sky Arts are indeed moving onto Season 5 (instead of going back to the third season. Wondering now if they'll go back to the third season after Season 5, then eventually repeat the last two seasons (technically the last two seasons, as The Alfred Hitchcock Hour started in the States the season after AHP ended).

Checked Sky TV's listings earlier, and yes, two episodes from AHP's fourth season are being repeated this coming Sunday evening/night (nothing on Saturday evening/night). I had seen AHP in the Sunday listings before, following The Agatha Christie Hour, but assumed they were repeats of the first or second seasons. I usually religiously check the TV listings for anything which I (and others) might be interested in. Didn't spot that Season 4 was also being shown at the weekend, which would explain why the fifth season is starting three days earlier than the estimate in my previous post.

Great news seeing something survive from Forces TV sadly closing, with Return of the Saint starting on Great TV from next Monday night. There doesn't seem to have been many series new to Great TV in recent times (it's one of the UK TV channels I occasionly look at in TV & Satellite Week).

ITV4 are currently showing again the second season of Magnum, P.I., so it'll be a while before we find out if they're going to show the fifth season in it's entirety this time, and eventually show the remaining three seasons.

Have double-checked the EpGuides list for Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and those three episodes under the Season 5 tab on Sky's On Demand service were indeed the first three episodes of the season originally shown in the States (the season premiere called "Arthur").

Back then, with American series, they seemed to keep to a consistent number of episodes per season. So without double-checking (9 times out of 10 I normally check and double-check), you assume it's the same number of episodes per season, until towards the end of their run, when the total number gradually drops. Although, in AHP's case..

Seasons 5 and 6 of AHP both comprised of 38 episodes, with the final, seventh season going back to 39 episodes.

United Kingdom UK TV channels Yesterday and That's TV

Really wasn't sure where to post about this. Documentary series Hornby: A Model World is not normally the sort of series I'd watch, but have watched the first two editions (Eddie Izzard appears in the second edition) of the first series, I'm quietly enjoying it (you have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it. I'm more interested in the model trains side of this series). All ten editions comprising the first series are available on Sky's On Demand service.

A new, second series started on channel Yesterday tonight at 8 pm - 9 pm. The first edition is being repeated on the channel this coming Thursday night (12th January) at 9 pm - 10 pm and next Sunday night (15th January) at 10 pm - 11 pm. Part of next Monday night's new edition includes Jools Holland in it.

*****

I read elsewhere on the forum later on last week, in either the North America or UK & Ireland sub-forum thread for RoboCop: The Series, that the series is being repeated on UK TV channel That's TV. Had never heard of the channel before. It's tucked away further down the Sky TV guide menu/section. It's being shown at 2 am - 3 am and 5 am - 6 am each day.

Also being shown currently on That's TV are True Crime: Murder USA, Till Death Do Us Part, The Likely Lads or Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?, The Benny Hill Show (unsure whether these are shorter versions of episodes or not), Hale and Pace and The Kumars at No.42.

United Kingdom Hornby: A Model World (Series Two on Yesterday)

Am almost halfway through the first series of Hornby: A Model World, but I read on Yesterday's Facebook page earlier that apparently the first edition of the new, second series wasn't shown on the channel this past Monday night (but it is available on Sky's On Demand service). The second series will start next Monday night (16th January) at 8 pm - 9 pm.

United Kingdom Themed model railways (re: Hornby: A Model World)

Steedeel, thought of yourself with the one set of related segments in the second of the two Series 1 editions of documentary series Hornby: A Model World that I watched last night. They showed an incomplete (work-in-progress) gritty, eighties-themed model railway which (to me) was fascinating to watch with all of the detail in the buildings and landscape etc.

This edition was "Series 1, Episode 6". Thought you'd be interested as I know you've spoken about liking Ken Loach and/or Mike Leigh's films.

Checked Sky's On Demand service earlier for Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and discovered that a Season 6 tab has appeared. I'd call it a sampler (like with Season 5 (the first three episodes were put up initially, before the rest were put up this week after the season started being repeated on Sky Arts). Four random episodes have been made available:

Season 6, Episode 6 "Pen Pal"
Season 6, Episode 12 "The Baby Blue Expression"
Season 6, Episode 13 "The Man Who Found the Money"
and Season 6, Episode 37 "Make My Death Bed" (the penultimate episode of the season).

I watched Dracula Unearthed tonight. And if you're wondering, yes its the "usual suspects" Iain Nathan et al...

The programme goes into the background pre Stoker and then moves through the better known films up to around 2000. One thing I enjoyed was the background music which is drawn from a number of films. They used a romantic music piece i love from the 1992 Coppola film for example. There are no interviews or archive material other than clips from some of the movies, but they (Kim Newman particularly) do go into some nice details especially about the reason for certain tropes such as the cape.

My love affair with D started really with my first year at Uni when the Coppola film was released. Flawed indeed (especially Keanu's accent!) but visually it was and still is sumptuous in my opinion.

After which I got the novel out of the Uni library (back when people read real books!). Even 30 years later, I remember the novel as being very enjoyable but physically hard to read as it is written in old prose often using language long since abandoned in written form.
