I picked this up when it was $20 recently so I’d have something to play after I finished up all the main games from 2022. Started playing earlier this week and came really close to bouncing off it after a few hours since it is basically just another derivative open world game. But unlike most generic open world games that just grind me down after a few hours, this one actually keeps getting better. It takes too long to get interesting, but once I unlocked a few cool combat/parkour powers, gained the ability to craft some fun ranged weapons, and started getting better weapons, it became satisfying to mow down hordes of undead and run like a maniac through the city.

So yeah, while this game does represent a lot of what I hate about modern open world level design, the core gameplay is surprisingly fun once the game actually gives the player what they need to enjoy themselves. Of all the tedious, Ubisoft-template open world games I played this year, I like this one the best.

I'm avoiding that one because I feel it will be more annoying than anything else. It doesn't seem like it would be fun for someone like me because I get frustrated easily.

The main things that are keeping me from jumping into this series are:
1. It's only first person view
2. The terrain puts the player in narrow spaces to deal with zombies
3. The zombies get stronger at night
4. Running zombies

If it was 3rd person, I would get it right away as 3rd person lets me see the character onscreen. I do have a few Far Cry games that are first person, but those are more open with the enemies to confront, not closer quarters like these Dying Light and Dead Island games tend to be.

While I like action games and level based games having grown up with them, I really do like games that let you explore a large map freely without restrictions when not on missions.

The main challenge I have is after exploring everything, what can the player do to keep the maps fun to explore? What abilities does the player have? Can they jump and run, roll or climb? Fly or drive? Those things really help. It looks like the Dying Light games allow some of those things. Dead Island has vehicles, but they are very limited in range and endurance. Like in Dead Rising.

Eventually, new games take the main focus away from the fun of past open world games along with new graphics and worlds to explore, and past open world games (and other games) tend to be neglected for years, as with most large games that require a large investment of time.

The running zombies are mainly what keep me away from the game combined with the first person view and the sometimes narrow spaces like in Dead Island 1.
What happens is the zombie runs at me, I hit it with a weapon that breaks too fast, as a second zombie attacks me from behind and then I'm struggling to survive. If it was 3rd person, I wouldn't mind as much.

You mentioned that you like the freedom that open world games have to offer. Elden Ring has that level of freedom in spades. It lacks the hand-holding that defines so many open world titles, so on the one hand, you might find that it’s the perfect game for you. It’s one of the few open world games that truly invites you to set your own path. But on the other hand, yeah, it is a challenging game. For some people that’s part of what makes it so rewarding but it’s not for everyone.

The parkour is the central gameplay mechanic. If you're surrounded by zombies, you should run. And after a while you're pretty much swimming in weapons. The fact that they break doesn't matter much. In any case, considering the nature of the game, it would make sense that you're going to run into scenarios where you're struggling to survive.

Like I mentioned before, the game takes longer than it should to give the player the freedom and the tools they need to really have fun, but once they do, it's much more fun that frustrating. Personally I like the 1st person view since it's one of the few things that sets the game apart from similar open world games and it makes the parkour feel a bit more exhilarating.

I was talking about Elden Ring. I've heard the game is a pain to get through.

I liked stuff like RDR 2, Days Gone and even that Mad Max game. The newer Tomb Raider games also. Horizon Zero was fun at times also. I'm not quite as fond of the fantasy type of stuff. And fighting big monsters and dragons. Or something like that.

But I did have some fun with the first Horizon. So I don't disregard those games totally.

I’d say that Elden Ring is vastly different than any of this titles. The only other open world games that I think are somewhat comparable are Breath of the Wild and Morrowind, and even then only in terms of exploration and how the open worlds are presented. I think Elden Ring is a tough game not to be impressed with if you try it, but if you don’t like fantasy or big fights then there’s a good chance it wouldn’t hold your interest.

Well, I did just buy Witcher 3... Isn't it a bit of fantasy?

Yeah. Witcher 3 is more typical fantasy while Elden Ring has a darker, almost fantasy-horror feel to it. The two games are vastly different in terms of combat and storytelling, though.

That “pain to get through” just won GOTY.

I'm not saying that in a context to where I'm saying that it is a bad game. I'm talking about it being a difficult game. Which it seems that many people who love the game agree with that.

It might be my favorite game of all-time but I don’t expect everyone to like it. I know a lot of people consider Red Dead 2 to be on the best games ever and I can’t stand that game. I’m glad that not all developers try to make games that will appeal to everyone.

I'd like a Gladiator type of game that isn't as much fantasy based as games like Elden Ring. Don't know if we will get it.

Developer and publisher Techland has today released its massive "Gut Feeling" update for Dying Light 2 across all platforms. Since its release in the early part of last year, this new patch for Dying Light 2 is likely one of the biggest that we have received in quite some time and makes a number of big fixes. Outside of simply improving the state of Dying Light 2 as a whole, though, this update also adds some notable new features to the open-world title.

I finally played Dying Light 1 and it wasn't what I was hoping despite a lot of hype that it got. Running zombies are a pain.
