I can't stand Svet, I really wish someone else would do the Criterion reviews. It seems like his two reviews of the Criterions 4Ks so far also use a bunch of words to say very little

Default Svet Sings Sadler & Safdie

Svet slays in his smoke show review of Uncut Gems, throwing shade at Sadler's performance, the Safdie's direction, and to top it off, suggesting the UHD is for suckers.

Sing it Svet!

I hadn't actually read the full opening of his review either (because I'm not really interested in the reviewers opinion of the film itself, just how the release looks and sounds). It's like he wasn't even paying attention. He calls Julia Fox a gold digger but, while it may seem that way early on, I think it's pretty apparent by the end that she actually cares about him. He says how unrealistic it is that Sandler is given such a long leash to pay back his debts but it's made explicitly clear that Arno is his ****ing brother-in-law. Arno's muscle I'm pretty sure is also mentioned to be guys he has recently hired as a last resort because he's had such a hard time getting Sandler to pay him back. He mentions how ridiculous Sandler's behavior is when he's A ****ING ADDICT! That's pretty accurate addict behavior. I'm pretty sure the Safdies talk about growing up around the Diamond District and meeting tons of people just like Howard in their Adventures in Moviegoing episode, so it's not like they're writing this assuming this is what it's like without any actual encounters with the scene and the people in it. Svet is a

I can't imagine why this site values Svet's opinions on movies at all, he seems like such a miserable person that doesn't even really like movies and seems more interested in pushing his clearly bigoted political ideologies than actually critiquing a movie.

By the way, let's not ignore how selective he is with his words here when describing our Jewish main character:

I prefer shorter reviews. I rarely read the introduction. I'll glance at the technical scores for a few minutes then move on. I like RAH's approach. You may not always agree with him but he's pithy and takes questions.

Yeah, it’s funny. I actually felt kinda the same way as he did about Sandler’s performance. I wasn’t a fan and thought it felt awkward… and also didn’t love the movie. BUT, despite that I probably wouldn’t include those thoughts in a professional review, or at least I’d downplay them and wouldn’t let them influence the overall score that I give to the release. I was surprised by how much his final score seemed to be impacted by his personal opinion of the film. Seemed unfair to me, especially for a film that so clearly has many fans.

For his Leave Her to Heaven Criterion review, Svet skipped the film review entirely, and just linked us to the earlier Twilight Time disc review (by someone else) before moving on to the tech portions. He could’ve easily just done that here and spared us this nonsense.

Yeah I really don't care if he dislikes it or not. Obviously not everyone is gonna like every movie but I, and I'm willing to be the majority of others that frequent this site, don't look at reviews for recommendations of what to watch. I already know if I like the movie or am interested enough to buy it. I just want to know how good it looks and sounds and what extras and packaging it has. Svet's not the only one that inserts their opinion on the film into their review but he seems the most egregious and throws his political views in as much as possible too

I will often read reviews I disagree with, usually because the writer is talented and shares viewpoints I didn’t consider, or their prose is nice to read.

But one thing that absolutely is unforgivable is a writer who refuses to be taught by what they are watching and stubbornly uses the film as a soapbox for their thinly veiled (In Svet’s case, openly bigoted) social commentary and self moralizing.

A continued embarrassment these, I think it would be intellectually dishonest to call them reviews, are posted. Such wild disrespect shown to the films to have them be written in such a way.

I'm missing the political commentary... read the review like three times, still not seeing what you're talking about.
