kind of interesting the alien sequence was done by ILM. I didn't know they did practical effects. Did they do practical effects for any other film?

So what are the odds of us getting a proper 4K from Shout?
I don't want to be the guinea pig but I've been wanting to watch this again for a while now and want to watch it on physical. The price is fine and Blu ray is fine with me, but if I know a 4K is in existence, it'll eat me alive. ![]() ![]() |

The trailer of this film creeped me out big time when I was a kid. I was 10 when the film was released but Alien Horror has never been a sub-genre I enjoyed as I typically just find it rather dull truth be told. I've loooooooooong wanted to watch this but just never got around it it. When Scream Factory announced their edition I was quite excited but still wanted a solid price before I took the plunge. The recent Paramount sale finally hit that threshold and so I picked up the film earlier this month. I'm just now finishing up my first viewing.
The film itself both exceeded my expectations and yet also was exactly what I was expecting. I very much enjoyed this one, but not necessarily for the film itself, but more so as a collection of it's parts. The cast, sound design, cinematagrapy... there is something very "real" about films of this era. I'm hesitant to call it organic, but I don't know how else to describe what I see/hear. There is a palpable sense of analog realness that permeates this film... from the interactions between cast members, the small town environments, the dust in the air and rocks beneath their feet... It's just a sort of realness through the film I greatly miss in modern filmaking of the last 20 years in which everything now has an artificial harshness about it. I really liked this one. I'm not overall too sad about having waited 30 years to finally watch it as it's the kind of film that I feel one needs to be in the right sort of mood/mind to really enjoy thoroughly. I don't know when I will re-watch this, but I am interested in picking up the Novel. If only Shout Factory had licesned that as well... no way am I paying $100+ for the paperback. I wish Hollywood would go back to this style of filmmaking. It feels like they've completely ignored compelling novels/stories these last 25 years and replaced them with more and more CGI and heavy handed messaging. Here's to hoping that they are maybe finally starting to see the error of their ways and perhaps we can again see unique and interesting stories brought to film. There are still a few Clive Barker Novel's I'm dying to see get the film treatment, but it's the unknown (to me) that is most exciting. Good Film, pick it up while the price is discounted. |

Glad to see people enjoy these films decades later. I saw it twice in the theater as a kid and remember it being a very slow burn buildup. The finale was really memorable at the time and I'm kind of ashamed at myself for seeking that out again online without just watching the entire movie again. I watched a ton of Unsolved Mysteries as a kid in the years leading up this film and so UFO, alien encounters and so forth were a scary theme as a child; those UM re-enactments and music were chilling if you were the right age back then. Pretty unique movie for the era and it's one I'd love to see in a theater again. Incredible poster art, btw, as a final aside.
