So if you break the wires that connect the halves what is the next course of action. Do you have to just replaced the entire Drive itself?

Any DIY fixes, Mike?

Warranty had expired about six months ago and even if it's still covered, I couldn't get it repaired by the warranty (PS3 is the US version).

UPDATE: I put my ear close to the PS3 before powering it up (and getting the red light) and I could hear the fan turning. Then I get yellow, red and three beeps. So the fan is running and then, nada.

Yeah so far the only DIY fixes for this issue have been replacing the hard drive. Other then that, its sending it to Sony.

Well another gentlemen reported he did the same thing, but unless you know how to solder them back together, its replacing the entire PS3 because I believe that you cannot swap out entire BD drives.

KZ2 started giving me YLOD. It would freeze in the game at the same spot. I could do other things on the ps3 but if I tried KZ2 it would ylod me. Then after one of the YLOD it is just completely dead. Just YLOD everytime I turn it on.

I have a 60gb model with a 320gb hard drive. Should I send it to Sony (and pay the 150) to get it repaired? Will I get the 60gb back? (4 usb ports and mem slots etc).

I tried swapping the hd but no luck. Also I can't get KZ2 out of the damn system. I have another ps3 so I'd like to play. Can you help with that also? Thanks!

If you don't want to pay the US$150, you can try to DIY the fix. The problem with the DIY options is that nobody who have tried it and made it work could definitively identify the cause of YLOD. One of the solutions (reflow) has a limit to the number of times you can do it before you do damage to your mobo.

So if you are a good DIYer or don't have the US$150, you can try it. If not, send it to Sony.

There are some companies that can do the reflow for you for half of the Sony repair cost but they themselves said that they can only repair 8 out of 10 PS3s sent to them.

You should. You have to call Sony first then tell them the model you have and then insist for the same 60GB model back.

You also have to tell them to take out the disc is that is inside. You also have to note to them to send you the 320GB HD back, unless you swapped it with the original HDD before you send the PS3.

I'm still weighing my options. Being without a PS3 is like not having a PC. Sony has made me dependent on the all-in-one media center.

Try holding down the power button until it beeps to turn it on and try the DIY tools.

Also Sony will give you back your disc and it doesn't hurt to let them know its in there.

Default PS3 won't turn on!!!

I never had any problems with my ps3 in the past. I was just playing MLB the show 09 and it froze and the system shut down. It beeped then the red light started flashing. Now when I try to start it up it just shuts it self back down. It sucks because I cannot eject the game disc. Please tell me this problem has an easy solution that doesn't involve me shipping it to sony. I have already been through enough of that with microsoft.

OK, just started having some issues. I have a 40 gig, about 14 months old. I just tried playing a blu-ray and it froze a couple of minutes in. Tried another Blu Ray, same thing. Tried a regular DVD, seemed to work ok. Tried another Blu Ray, this time the PS3 recognized it, and started to load it, but couldn't. I get an error that says "invalid disc" and then "cannot play disc". Any ideas?

I think every ps3 owner should get a SONY Care extended warranty. My ps3 stopped reading discs 5 months after I got it. I sent my system in for repair and they replaced the BD drive. As soon as I got my PS3 back which was within the week it broke down. I phoned Sony and got the warranty it cost me 105 dollars for 4 years. I know allot of people Have had their PS3s since 2006 when it launched but I'd rather pay less money and be covered for the 4 years. I keep hearing that the BD drives in the 40GB Model PS3 are Cheap. My BD drive obviously was cheap.

Try this.
pwer off in back
now hold finger on front pwr btn
turn on in back while keeping finger on pwr in front
wait for 2 beeps, keep holding down and wait for 3 quick beeps
unit will shut down, release finger
hold finger down again on front pwr wait for 2 quick beeps then immediately release finger
menu prompt will come on
select 2

It sounds like you may need to replace the Blu-ray laser it in. However I think that you should do what Uncle Leo just posted above my post first to see if that resolves your issue.

I've just watched the Shawshank Redemption and it played fine but when i went to watch some of the extras my PS3 switched from the hd output to a lower resolution i presume but all i got was a blank blue screen and it froze on there, i normally see this when its switching between hd and sd but this time it froze. It's happened in the past with some extras on blu rays but i've never really been too bothered. Was just wondering is it something wrong with the PS3 or does the tv not support the lower resolution that the extras are in? oh and its all PAL, no imports.

Does this happen every single time you watch a particular extra on the Shawshank disc? Or did it only do it that one time and stopped after you rebooted your PS3?

It happens everytime i try to play any extras on the shawshank disc after numerous times of rebooting the PS3. Also happened with the extras on Reservoir dogs.

Well what I recommend doing is a full Backup of your PS3 and then formating it. After the format run the Restore of it.

Think of the PS3 as a computer that sometimes it just needs to be cleaned up every once in awhile in order to perform properly.

If the reformating doesn't work try that secret menu trick.

Power off your PS3. Hold down the power button until it beeps and select the second option.
