Someone tell me if I understand this correctly...

The "ultimate" cut is not a "kitchen sink" version, but a re-editing? Some scenes moved around, some removed completely?

Is there a version which has a better tone to it?

Side observation: what is it with dally and movies that have 400 versions?

The Ultimate Cut is edited entirely from scratch. The restoration team combed through 96 hours of unused negatives, meaning it doesn't share a single frame with the unrated theatrical cut. Some scenes run shorter, some longer. A few scenes have been cut for pacing. The film is in chronological order, whereas the theatrical cut had several scenes chopped up and in the wrong place (which introduced some continuity errors). I'd say close to half of the third act is now made up of formerly deleted scenes. There's also a new animated title sequence by Dave McKean based on a nightmare scene in the script which was never filmed.

It probably goes without saying, but The Ultimate Cut only uses footage shot by Tinto Brass during principal photography. The scenes of unsimulated sex which Bob Guccione and Giancarlo Lui shot and edited in later are missing. The theatrical cut runs 156 mins, The Ultimate Cut 178 mins.

Side observation: what is it with dally and movies that have 400 versions?

It stars Malcolm McDowell, Teresa Ann Savoy, Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole, John Steiner and John Gielgud. It is the only feature film produced by the men's magazine Penthouse. Producer Bob Guccione, the magazine's founder, intended to produce an explicit pornographic film with a feature film narrative and high production values. He also cast Penthouse Pets as extras in unsimulated sex scenes filmed during post-production by himself and Giancarlo Lui.
Caligula: The Ultimate Cut includes the addition of a prologue that illustrates one of Vidal’s missing scenes, created by graphic artist Dave McKean, and there is a new wraparound score by composer Troy Sterling Nies. While the reconstruction was heralded by actor McDowell, in keeping with the film’s tumultuous 45-year journey, it was disavowed last year by director Brass. Far removed from the artistic quarrels of Tinto Brass, Gore Vidal and Bob Guccione, Thomas Negovan approached this new version from a neutral perspective. His desire to elevate the actors gives greater strength to the narrative and provides a new approach to the Emperor Caligula’s madness. Another feat is that not a single shot from the original film was used, which makes Caligula – The Ultimate Cut a completely new feature film.

Whoa, so the uncut version will be in 4K SDR on this? Hell yes! I assumed that was gonna be relegated to 1080p. This will make me a buyer.

Oh, wow. I was not expecting the theatrical version to be presented in 4K. We are eating good, my babies! No sign of the Malcolm McDowell commentary which Negovan said he was recording in May. Wonder if it's being held back for another territory?

The making-of documentary is an hour long. Can't remember how long the Brass interview is, maybe half an hour at most. I don't actually recognise that "Guccione Scandal" featurette so maybe it's new, but otherwise, it could just be the alternate, chopped-down version of the making-of which was also on the DVD.
