It's clear the the previous scan was adequate, just over sharpened. That's why I consider this a subtle upgrade, because there is no real big revelations with the new version.
This is probably the best its ever gonna look. Shout should have recalled the original blu-ray with its bad audio track. The commentary on the new disc is alright. Would have been better if Carpenter was there, but I don't think he really cares about this film since the only reason he made it was so they would let him make another film he really wanted, which never happened. If you don't own the original disc, this is a clear buy. If you already own it, I'd wait for a sale. Last edited by jwb; 10-05-2024 at 10:19 PM. |

Few things I hate more than shimmering edges from excessive sharpening, so I'm glad I ordered this, even though it's a Carpenter I rarely revisit. I've probably seen Ghosts of Mars ten times and Vampires twenty times in comparison to this one's twice.

OMFG it's really been 30 years......
![]() edit: I didn't get a chance to dig into this transfer very deeply because my house is in the middle of some major remodeling and my theater room is being used to store some furniture while new marble floors are going in elsewhere. I did, however, get to watch a few scenes of the Village of the Damned uhd briefly on my oled, and it looks surprisingly filmic with excellent depth and color. I think it smokes the old blu. I'll have to scrutinize the encode later when I get to sit down and watch the whole feature soon, but as it stands, I'm fairly happy so far with the upgrade from the portions I've previewed. Sure, it's no Arrow or Synapse jam, but absent any glaring errors I'm unaware of, if this is the only uhd release the film ever gets, I think I could be ok with that. Did the latest 4k release drop the old commentary on this?
I thought it had Carpenter talking with his cinematographer? or am I thinking of some other release? |

The uhd shows a very nice bump in fine detail. More filmic with decent grain. Solid, conservative color palette and great skin tones. I remain pleased with the 4k upgrade. Shame the film doesn't seem to have a few more fans. I hope Shout continues to up its game like this on the format. Hopefully they give the same attention to detail and solid encodes to the upcoming Vampires and Ghosts of Mars uhd releases.
If Assault on Precinct 13 and ItMoM get solid uhds soon, and The Thing 4k can eventually get a definitive uhd release with OG audio (maybe Arrow?), Carpenter's filmography can close out on a real high note on the format. Last edited by DaylightsEnd; 12-08-2024 at 10:48 PM. |

Finally watched this on 4K and it was great. The best it has ever looked and sounded. Gonna dig into the special features on the Blu-ray now.
