MAG: The Massive Interview (Part 2)

This is only part of the interview.
Quote:
Is it a challenge to balance the rewards you’re giving the player – to ensure that he has incentives to be a useful team player while still earning personal rewards and progression?

This has actually been something we focused on early, and as such it seems to be playing out well so far. Our incentives are all based on letting players play how they want, but giving them added experience bonuses for doing these things in support of the squad. For example, a sniper type player may just want to shoot people in the face from 200 yards away. He can do this all day and have fun. But, if he shoots guys that are next to a bunker the squad is trying to assault, he’ll get significant bonus experience. In addition, many of our upgraded gear items provide passive bonuses not just to the soldier, but to his squad.

It’s been revealed that one of the classes in MAG will be a demolition specialist. Will this be for specific, set targets? Or can this class (and other classes with explosives) destroy scenery, thereby altering the layout of the map in an improvised way?

We don’t have traditional classes in MAG. We follow more of a loose system of skills, which the player can mix and match as he sees fit. If you spend most of your skill points in demolitions, we will identify you as a demo expert, but that’s because you chose those skills, not because you chose that class. This gives players more freedom like one would expect from real soldiers. You could be a recon specialist who cross trains in medical skills, or a heavy weapons expert who is well trained in electronic warfare. It’s up to you to play how you see fit, with certain tradeoffs of course…

wow that is a &^%$ ton of people, if they can pull that many people off without an insane amount of lag, and actually upkeep their servers then the game should rock. Looks interesting

It definitely seems like they've asked themselves and answered the questions we have about making this work on such a large scale.

Zipper was the best shooter developer for the PS2, this is their first PS3 game, and they have more competition now from other 1st/2nd parties. Now we already have from Sony:

- SOCOM
- Resistance
- Resistance 2
- Killzone 2

Can Zipper regain the Sony shooter crown? I think it can (and I loved Killzone 2).

I think KZ2 will be tough to top (makes Halo 3 look like a PS2 game).

The others can be topped much easier.

Kind of wondering how this will be received since most online players don't like shooters with a full 32 players. Smaller games, maps are preferred by most. So how will adding 200 players be received?

They avoided commenting on whether or not the environments were destructible at all...

....this game is intriguing, but I don't think it will pull me away from Bad Company, unless they pull out some new gametypes that really are something that hasn't been realized yet by other "smaller" games.

I have trouble finding like 5 people wanting to work as a team in FPS games online.

I can only imagine trying to get 100 people to work as a team. It's going to be a complete spray-n-pray frag-fest.

How so? There's only 16 people in an area?

This game looks like it's gonna be pretty good. But is this a tactical online gaming? Why can't 256 people just go run and gun on each other?!

Dont forget Warhawk, that game was a blast.
Not all shooters need to be tactical.

I hate Tactical shooting. i just wanna go out and shoot somebody, not have to set myself up at an area and gun someone. Head 2 Head!

Warhawk sucks

You really don't know what the game is going to be like. They have mention several elements that is suppose to help corral this thing. Just because you don't believe something will work doesn't mean it won't. These people are solely concentrating on the multiplayer aspects and they've had a LOT more time to think about this than you have.

In the end, you are killing your chances of liking the game before you even get familiar with it. You are locking yourself into a negative position on this game. Your need to be right may begin to override the merits of MAG in your mind. It's not fair to you or the game.

i think what he is sayng is that people like to go rambo and dont communicate and work as a team .. zipper has no way of controling that .. no matter how they design the game if people dont work together its going to be the game he doesnt like .. its the sole reason i cant stand call fo duty .. everyone just goes out and john rambos and there is no communication or teamwork and it makes for a dull boring game experience ..

Better off not playing multiplayer games unless you're the organised clan type then.
