Close enough. I can't vouch for their lower end receivers.

Denon AVR-4310CI A/V Receiver
Number of Amp Channels: 7
Rated Power (watts per channel): 130 into 8 ohms, two channels driven (7 x 130)

HT Labs Measures
Five channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 113.8 watts
1% distortion at 131.0 watts

Seven channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 104.6 watts
1% distortion at 116.6 watts

I was curious the power claims were like the Pioneer lines where they are right on the money for there expensive elite models but drastically overstated for their lower end models.

One last question. Would you all recommend this receiver or what would you recommend under $500 and where would be the best place to get it?

Sorry for all the questions

Like louhamilton suggested to kopkiwi, get a receiver with pre-outs if you're concerned about power. The Marantz SR5003( if you can find one ) meets its power rating & has pre-outs. The Harmon Kardon AVR3600 is $699 NEW at: http://www.jr.com/product/productDet...uct=HK_AVR3600

It has truthful power ratings & pre-outs( all HK receiver power ratings are legit ).

From the above link.
More Gain is Better?
"I once picked on Emotiva for creating their latest series of amps with higher than usual voltage gain (32dB unbridged, 38dB bridged). A typical high performance amp only a few years ago had around 29dB of gain via the unbalanced inputs meaning if a preamp drive level was around 2Vrms it would be capable of driving a 400 watt amplifier to full rated power without clipping itself and turning off. I found many budget receivers couldn’t drive their preamp outs any higher than 1.2Vrms without clipping and distorting or shutting down. That meant an amplifier with a similar gain structure would only be capable of being driven to 142watts when that receiver was used as the preamp! In the case with the Emotiva XPA-2 amp of 32dB of gain, that same 1.2Vrms would drive it to its full rated 250 watts/channel specification. When I spoke to the company President, Dan Laufman, he said they deliberately sacrificed a bit of SNR in order for their amp to be more compatible with receivers being used as preamps to drive them. This approach makes a lot of sense! Axiom Audio also has a similar gain structure in their A1400-8 Class D amplifier and for the very same reasoning though they claim to have achieved this without sacrificing any SNR."

The strategy above was a blessing, until receiver manufacturers started omitting pre-outs from their lower end offerings.

I thought I would post the new Audioholics review of the 4310ci for those interested. I know there have been a few members inquiring about this AVR. Looks like Audioholics liked it .

1. The manual is your friend!
2. Bust out the audyssey mic and run through the set up procedure. Be sure your speakers are all in the spots they will be in first!!!
3. Sit back and enjoy!

I am still learning new things about my receiver pretty much every week or two, and have had it for almost 2 years!

The manual is not your friend, although it is a good resource guide after you are all set up.

This is the best setup guide hands down for Denon AVR's:

Default Help with HD audio settings.

I need some help. I have my new receiver (Denon 4310) and I can't get Dolby True HD or DTS-HD Master Audio to light up. I know I must have something set wrong but I can't seem to hit the right combination. I am playing Tranformers ROTF from my Fat PS3 it is set to LPCM. I have also tried a Dolby True HD blu-ray. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

PS3 Fat does not bitstream HD audio, it decodes it internally and sends it to your AVR as PCM. Your lights will not light up unless you bitstream with a capable player. However, there is no audible difference, it is the same. You can push select while playing a movie on your PS3 Fat and look at the bitrate in the upper right corner of the screen and see that you are indeed hearing TruHD, DTS master, or LPCM HD audio.

Your settings are correct.

Thanks dase, Yes it does show when I hit the display on the PS3 remote.
I have another question about the firmware update. Has anyone been successful in updating their firmware? I seem to be missing some surround sound modes. Direct, Dolby PL IIx and DTS.

I have successfully updated my firmware 3 times without any issues at all. I do have a very fast connection and don't mess around with anything (computer or AVR) while it is updating. I don't know if that matters or not but that's what I do. One of the updates took around 30 minutes with the shortest being 21 minutes. After you connect your Denon will tell you how long it will take. It should be a painless process.

I have read a few people have bricked their 4310's updating them. I tried today and it failed at 2 minutes left. I thought it was bricked but I got it back by the power down and hold up down enter in the unit. I still think i'm missing some surround sound modes. Direct, Dolby PL IIx and DTS. Do you have these listed under surround sound modes? Will the firmware get me these?

You should have those without any firmware updates. You can access and cycle either direct or stereo by pressing the D/ST button on your main remote. DTS will show up if you are sending the AVR a DTS signal. If you are talking about DTS neo:6 then it should be in the menu.

On the main remote press menu then use the arrow keys to scroll to surround mode. Menu<surround mode:

The list reads (for me):

Stereo
Direct
Dolby PLII
DTS Neo:6
7 Channel Stereo
Widescreen
Super Stadium
Rock Arena
Jazz Club
etc. etc.

Yes... DTS neo:6 is not in the menu. I saw a youtube video and it had 3 or four options that I didn't have on the menu. I do not have dolby PLII either.

Sorry to hear about that. Do you have all 5 or 7 speakers and a sub hooked up? If so have you ran auto setup/audyssey yet? Double checked cables and connections? You should try that first. That is indeed strange. If all esle fails, you may want to try resetting the microprocessor. It's on page 111 of your manual.

Try playing something with 2 channel audio (cd) and then see if it appears in the menu. Wierd....

It is strange. Thank you for the help. I was able to just complete the firmware update. It is now at the latest firmware and I am still missing Dolby PLII
DTS Neo:6.

I will try to reset the microprocessor tomorrow as it is going to wipe out all my settings.

Thanks again for the help. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow night after work.

I couldn't sleep not knowing if the reset would fix it so I reset it and the options are still not there.
I will have to make some calls tomorrow.
