That's my experience as well. I can't remember what big mall store that closed down years ago but we had purchased a TV and warranty (for our grandmother). They closed down months later and we lost the warranty.

If CC is still redeeming the warranties, that's great news though.

I'll probably do the same thing at CC and at least take a look. Though since I'm not looking for big ticket electronics, I can probably just eyeball the PS3s, PSPs, BDs, and software from memory. (Though if I could get an Onkyo 605/606 for cheap.... who am I kidding - wife'll kill me)
Too funny...that's exaclty what I'm interested in, but I know 1) Wife would kill me too and 2) better deal can probably be found elsewhere.

Austina - sorry about the job, but mind me asking - why did you stay until now? Did you think this was the likely outcome or are you somewhat shocked. My wife and I got out of Richmond after the summer 2007 corporate layoff (when none of the managers between the CEO and her were there anymore), but curious to see some insight from someone who stuck it out to the end.

Well it's made ever harder for me by the fact that 1) we're in the process of refinancing our house for a lower rate and 2) I have no decent speakers/reciever now - so I'm not sure how buying the receiver now and starting to pick up speakers little by little over the year would go (and yes, by extension, buying the speakers now would be right out)

austina, as a fellow circuit city employee i know what your feeling. i have heard that question a million times also. and the whole sun tv thing happened because they did their own in house warranties.. no big box retailers use their own warranties as far as i know, so if you bought one your still able to get service as usual.

I called this over a year ago on this very forum. Circuit City had been a poorly run business for many years now and once the economy slowed down I knew it would be killed off like the dinosaurs. My advice to people here is to avoid the liquidation sales. Going off the ones that ended in December there will be little in the way of actual deals.

seems like it was only a matter of time till this happened anyway, im sure they probably wont list it on their website, but i wonder if anyone knows where one would find out when individual stores are closing down? im sure the stores that do the most business will probably stay open a little longer than the ones that dont

Circuit City Stores, Inc. to Liquidate

RICHMOND, Va., Jan 16, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Circuit City Stores, Inc. announced today that it will seek Bankruptcy Court approval to begin the process to liquidate the assets of the company.
"We are extremely disappointed by this outcome. The company had been in continuous negotiations regarding a going concern transaction. Regrettably for the more than 30,000 employees of Circuit City and our loyal customers, we were unable to reach an agreement with our creditors and lenders to structure a going-concern transaction in the limited timeframe available, and so this is the only possible path for our company," said James A. Marcum, vice chairman and acting president and chief executive officer for Circuit City Stores, Inc.
Circuit City will provide more details in the near term about the plans for the liquidation of the stores and other assets, the status of the company's Web site and firedogSM services operations, the status of its Canadian operations and plans for the company's bankruptcy proceedings.
The company does not anticipate any value will remain from the bankruptcy estate for the holders of the company's common equity, although this will be determined in the continuing bankruptcy proceedings.
The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2008. The case number for Circuit City's Chapter 11 filing is 08-35653. Additional information can be found by visiting the company's investor information home page at http://investor.circuitcity.com and clicking on "Breaking News" and at the Claims Agent's Web site at www.kccllc.net/circuitcity.

i thought that things would turn around and because the new CEO seemed to be doing the right things to get the company going again. just a little too late in my opinion. sorry to hear about your wife. hope all is well with you too. its only a part time job for me while im in college but it still will be tough because ive made a lot of friends in my store and now is not the time to be trying to get work. the show must go on though.

The bright spot to refinancing is not only the monthly savings but you might also find you skip one monthly payment. That might be a good use of that "extra" money. My wife hated the idea of buying speakers when I did, but now loves having the surround sound experience. I personally want HD audio and want to upgrade my receiver.
