I'm not keen on the harsher, arguably modern grade on the newer disc and I'm surprised how the old disc still stands up. Cooler, but more natural grade for a SDR presentation. It's not the clear cut upgrade I'd been expecting.

This is going to be a very subjective one as is often the case with significantly differing grades. Some are going to like the new one, some will prefer the old. I'm definitely the latter, especially after taking a second look. It's a bit too extreme a look for me on the new one. The statue has gone teal much more strongly than the magenta bias on the older one. https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x...2&l=0&i=4&go=1

I always enjoyed this since i rented it when i was 10 years old on video and a nice anthology.

AND MY GOD the new 4K restoration from the original negative is FAN-STINKIN-TASTIC! you'd swear it was a movie that just came out this year than in 1990 with quality detail even on the gore which looks more beautiful, brighter and detailed than ever even the hair on Andrienne Barbeau's head and details on clothing too.

The extras are superb and nice to have the score on CD too. Blue Underground, you did it again along with Zombie, Maniac and New York Ripper.

The pictures of the new scan at caps-a-holic look inferior to me. Just look at the wooden panels which now have a pinkish-green hue. The white fringe of the carpet now also has a green hue.

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x...0&l=0&i=3&go=1

I don't see more details either, just more grain. Honestly I am a bit disappointed.

Only reason I upgraded my Blue Underground to 88 films was because of completing the Italian movie collection. I find Two Evil Eyes a disappointing movie, mainly for the silly Romero entry. The Argento entry is ok but considering both filmmakers, forgettable.

Would love to own Tales from the Darkside on blu-ray, that had a great Romero short.

Has anyone else noticed that the soundtrack CD is just a rip from a vinyl source?? This is hugely disappointing. My old bootleg CD that I got from a private collector years ago sounds better than this. I'm happy to have this new release for the added extras but coupled with how the new scan isn't quite the home run I expected it to be, this is the first time I've been disappointed by a BU release.

What the hell? If that's true, its about time BU getting their quality check on line and answer to their costumers. What is this shit with this release??

Does anyone know the name of the classical music Annabelle plays with her student in the Black Cat segment in the scene Rod steps out of the shower, notices the cat and approaches it?

Also not sure how I feel about the new scan based on the screencaps. It looks very vibrant for sure but I also like the colors of the old disc.

The sheet music is marked J.S. Bach, and it sounds like one of his Brandenburg Concertos, which Madeleine Potter says she can play in her interview on disc two. Listen to the six concertos online and if you have a better musical ear than I do then you can probably figure out which one.

I'm honestly not surprised the soundtrack CD is taken from a vinyl source, as the only release of it (up until now) was an Italian vinyl pressing in the early 90s.

Plenty of obscure heavy metal albums that have been receiving CD releases lately have been sourced from original vinyl pressings, so this is rather par for the course to me.

Who knows if the actual soundtrack materials still exist in 2019?

While I could tell it was an LP rip, it still sounded damn good to my ears.

They should have released this film on 4K UHD since a BD release already exists.

Two questions for those who know the film well:

1. When Rod returns from his lakeside getaway, the phone rings as he enters the house and there’s no response when he answers the phone twice. Who is calling him?
2. How exactly does Rod kill Detective Graham’s partner (The caucasian policeman)? I still couldn’t tell from multiple viewings of this film. It looks like he hits him in the chest or something.

With caps, the old release looks different but also good. But watching them, the new really does look so much better. The old one just looks really dull when it comes to color.

I see Blue Underground will be releasing Zombie and Maniac on 4K UHD. Will Two Evil Eyes likely be eventually released on this format as well?

A year later, I am back to not so sure. Both releases have bad color. In this shot the DVD has better color than the pinkish and overly bright original BD and the tealed remaster BD. The DVD is really dark, though.

This outdoor shot looks better colorwise than the DVD. Trees look like trees. There is also this...

Is the 88 release the same encode as the original BU BD, just ported across?

i only have the UK DVD by Anchor Bay, and it's a very bad ntsc to pal conversion. It isn't even treated as one film, but as two shorter movies accessible separately from the menu. Not a good effort at all.
