OAR is the only way to go. The aspect ratio is best determened the professional artistic sensability of the film director. We should be seeing it as is with no modifications. Most films, even 1:85 will have black bars. What you are looking for is very specific and will mostly include films that were shot in digital/HD or cg/animated films. 1:85 does not equal 16:9. I really don't get what the fuss is about. People should just get over it and judge a film for it's quality and not it's shape. Pay attention to what's in between the "black bars". It's the film that was made, the way it was intended to be viewed.

For horror fans, "28 Days Later" is 1.85:1, but the video quality is so awful that I wouldn't bother with it. Thankfully, the sequel (also 1.85:1) is MUCH better and worth buying. If you own the DVD already to "28 Days," that is probably all you need.

I am new to this site, and have been reading for about an hour. I too am a person who was frustrated when I played my first movie on BluRay. I saw that the infamous black bars were still there. And YES, I understand now that it's the way the film is shot that will determine this. But to all you purist who "shake your head" or just "don't understand" why this is so important to some of us, maybe you just need to get over it. Obviously, there are a lot of us who want to see the movies "fill the screen". I have had satellite TV for over a year, and all the movies shown in HD by HBO, Showtime, etc.. "fill the screen"... and quite honestly, I think it rocks. Sorry if that makes me uncool, or makes me a person who just doens't get it. Quite honestly, I don't really care. I am just happy that people like simplepinoi177, are posting movies that will show the way I (and a lot of others) want to see them.
Keep the lists coming!!!! |

Hi, I'm looking for a list of blu-ray movies in 16:9 format. I love this, because it fills my 26" LCD Toshiba. I hate Anamorphic format (2.00-2.75 wide), and I still don't understand why they're making this for home usage (on DVD and BR). I'm collecting movies in 16:9 shape and I'm asking for list of this movies releasad on BR. Of course if someone can recommend something, please do.
For now I have: The Godfather Collection, Goodfellas, Lost 3rd season and 2 seasons of Weeds. sry for my bad english |

The reason some movies are released in 2.00 -2.75 (and we actually have one in 2.89 now) is because these movies were photographed in that way, and to release them in a 1.78, their image would have to be modified (cropping the sides of the movie, in some cases, nearly up to 40%) to fit the screen.
The reason these movies are being photographed this way is because directors and the movie-going audience prefer the wider shape on the theater screens for most action, epic, adventure and sci-fi/fantasy films (projected in 2.39 currently), and the High Defintion Blu-ray Disc version reflects this image accurately. I'm going to merge this thread with an old one that has a list of movies photographed in shapes that would fill a 16:9 screen. edit: This post earlier in the thread by crackinhedz has also a link to a list. There's also our movie database that lists aspect ratios of the movies. Last edited by Deciazulado; 09-18-2008 at 08:04 AM. |

The best full screen sci/fi movie I have ever seen is- the Mist, by steven King.
Some people just don't understand why having a full screen movie is so important, it cuts the TV in half, I have a 50" set, with those bars I would be watching a 25" set. the only answer would be what other DVD's do, they put wide screen on one side and fullscreen on the other. |

![]() Otherwise, I just hope no one in Hollywood is reading this thread. I can just see someone at Warner going, "Well, we could cram both a 16:9 and an OAR version of the film on the disc. We'll just use DD audio, and cut the video bitrate in half -- turn up the dial on on all the grain reduction and sharpening tools to make the video easier to compress. It should make everyone happy, right? While we're at it, let's see if we can fit a 1.33:1 version for people with older HD CRT sets that were 4:3." |

I especially like to thank you for this post. This is EXACTLY why i put up this thread/list. When I first started this thread, there was no list out there like this. And even though there are a couple now that is more comprehensive and updated, many of them simply put in those with a certain aspect ratio even though those movies show differently. I basically wanted to compile a list from users who have actually seen a movie being fullscreen or not. Thank you again. |

Thanks for adding my Blu-ray suggestions to the main list (I don't need any credits though
![]() I see they've gone in a new section called "Fullscreen Bluray Non-Movies", but there are quite a few documentaries and concerts already in the main section. If non-movies need to be separate from movies, shouldn't the documentaries and concerts etc. be moved from the main list and put into the second list instead?
