I'm looking forward to seeing it. Herzog is a polarizing director and is not for everybody.

Inglorious Basterds

Film: 2/5
-wow, wasn't very impressed. perhaps i bought into the hype of this film. my mistake
-i now believe that certain subject matter is just off limits to any comedy genre (black noir included). this is just for my personal movie consumption. anyone else is free to watch whatever they want. but i just couldn't "submit" to the comedy genre here.
-as with most tarantino films, the parts were greater than the sum. individual scenes seemed to be isolated in nature, and merely for purposes of inducing an "ooo" "aaahhh" from the audience. this entertainment effect of each of these individual steroid-scenes is far greater than any overall contribution they were to have on the overall plot. my main criticism of tarantino.
-casting was also not good IMO: it took until about 10 minutes before teh credits rolled until i finally was starting to get used to the pitt tennessee accent. one reason why familiar actors can be a bad idea (associated roles/accents/classes. pitt=pretty boy, etc). and mike myers...WTF? he even did dr. evil-like smiles. i rubbed my eyes, thinking i was dreaming.
-maybe i'll read some reviews and see if i totally missed something, but i still have no idea what the point was.

Rear Window

Film: 5/5
-second viewing in the past 2 months
-bought the DVD (a rare DVD purchase for me)
-i'd say in my top 20, maybe top 10. this film just sends chills down your spine. the simplicity. the slow pace. the barking dogs, the honking cars. you are in that courtyard. you are on that windowsill, sitting beside stewart.
-its depressing how much the thriller movies today stink, after watching this

A Man Apart - This is probably my favorite Vin Diesel film. I havnt seen all of his movies but I really like this film. I think its an underrated cop/drama. I know people give him a bad rap about his acting, but I thought he did a good job in this peticular film. He showed emotion and his sincerity felt real. All in all I would buy this film if they release it in the US! Ill give it a 3.5/5 Got Em!!

Where the Wild Things Are

2 out of 5 stars

Max (Records) is a young kid with an active imagination. It's his way of coping with a dysfunctional family and feeling that the world is against him. One night he has a violent confrontation with his mother (Keener) and runs away in a primal rage. Soon he finds himself boarding a boat that whisks him through stormy seas. Eventually he crashes on a remote place inhabited with giant, bizarre creatures who like him are also caught up in their own misery. When I saw the trailer for this I really wanted to see it. I also knew going in that it was based on a popular children's book. Sadly I was left with a profound sense of disappointment as the credits rolled. First off, this movie is very dark - both literally and figuratively. I kept thinking to myself 'am I watching a kids movie or a horror?'. Thankfully by the second half it lightens up visually and I'm not entirely sure that wasn't on purpose - possibly to reflect entering the lightness of his imagination? Still it was annoying. I also had a hard time keeping awake as it was so slow. Normally I like slow moving films as long as there is something there to keep my attention, but this was excruciating. I was also put off by the sense of menace throughout. Those cute creatures were just as likely to disembowel the kid as play with him. All that said, there was one thing which hugely impressed me and that was the puppeteer work. That in itself might be enough reason to see it. Ultimately, Where the Wild Things Are is to adult for children and not adult enough for grown ups.

Well, I guess it's not for everybody. I do agree that the plot is a little weirdly disjointed, but I liked the way it came together (I think it's similar, but perhaps better than, "Pulp Fiction").

I never thought of the movie has a comedy. Heck, I don't know what to call it; a war drama I guess, with comedic parts.

I found Brad Pitt amusing; but perhaps he is rather over-the-top. As for Mike Meyers, I didn't realize it was him until later. Considering that his British accent is so fake and over-the-top, I figured that any Austin Powers association would help tip off the audience that his scene was not meant to be taken seriously.

Otherwise...yeah, it's not for everybody.

We rented Sherlock Holmes over the weekend. I am happy to report that I liked it more than I expected.

This version of Holmes is a tad, I dunno, goofier than the one I have in my head from reading Doyle's stories, but it was closer to that than I had been led to believe. I enjoyed the visuals in the movie, and the story was interesting enough. The chick was a good character, and pretty easy on the eyes too.

So, not one I will be buying, but I'm glad to have seen it. I give it three bags of popcorn out of five.

Spoof of Hollywood movies that have perfect happy endings. Comedy, really. I went into it thinking it was a serious cop drama. I'm still actually.

This film had a sort of "Coenesque" quality to it. It worked for me, but I can understand why it may not for others.

I thought it was very overrated as well though I liked it a little better-- I thought Pitt was hilarious, the opening scene at the farm was excellent, the
build up to the bar shoot-out also very well done.
The violence was appalling (peaking with the revolting baseball bat scene--if you're going to kill someone that brutally, why not make it a despicable character like the main bad guy? instead Tarantino chooses what might have been the most sympathetic Nazi charactor?!
An uneven film to be sure-- 3.0 out of 5.0 for me

Let the Right One In.

Didnt click for me. The good...

The cinematography was really creative and effective. The sound editing and design were superb, really. The growling stomach effect really demonstrated Elis suffering well. The score was really good. Performances, for the most part were all pretty good.

The bad...

The story just didnt capture me. It didnt really go anywhere.

Film 3/5
PQ 4/5
AQ 4.5/5 (for its effectiveness)

See it! I am clearly in the minority, plus some of the scenes are great. It's just the "Whole" that didnt work for me. I never wanted to turn it off. Its one of those weird movies that while I am watching it, I am saying to myself "This lame" but I never once was bored.

Completley agree with every statement. Cinematography was great, as was the design and score. Performances were serviceable. Hpwever, like you, I didn't think the story went anywhere. I think it's one of the most overrated foreign films in recent memory.
