It was a race against time, not a lack of money to complete the episodes prior to broadcasting. At around episodes 18 and 19, the production had reached its limit of what could be done. Thus the "director's cut" versions of episodes 20-24 and the End of Evangelion movie were created to restore what the original goals were in those episodes. It culminated in the final two episodes being the re-use of older completed cels/backgrounds instead of newly animated content because there simply wasn't time to create that. No amount of money would've hired people that were busy working on other projects to animate, so it's not money, but time that created that issue.

With the exception of the final two episodes, it's very unlikely that any change in time affected a shift of mood like Eva had. Episode 16 was where it shifted to a psychological drama, which would make sense in a 26 episode series from a story-telling standpoint. Given that scripts, storyboards, and planning were already done prior to that, changing it suddenly would've had more work on a short timeframe in comparison to re-using assets or holding scenes longer. Something more like the length of time on a specific scene in episode 24 is evident of this: the scene happens the visual way it was meant to happen, but takes longer and other, side, bits were trimmed (probably scenes like Shinji's loneliness in the city).

Is there any place that sells said book? I've been wanting to find a behind the scenes book on the series that goes beyond what I've just read online.

PPL really b like that it drives me crazy!! lmao

The only dub was also serviceable (if somewhat inconsistent).

I watched the old dub back in the day, now watching the new one. I don't feel like I am missing anything.

The new dub certainly is not bad. I can understand some folks preferring the old, but calling the new one bad is wrong.

For a bad dub witness the first release of A.I.C.O on Netflix. That was an awful dub. Note, that has since be debubbed, and is much better now.

Anno and Studio Khara wanted this, they wanted a new dub with an emphasis on the things they want. Don't kid yourself otherwise. This was not driven by Netflix revisionism, this is Anno (maybe with a small case of George Lucas disease).

The HD video is outstanding by the way. Looks beautiful on my big screen.
Oh my gosh, I had no idea they redubbed it (AICO). I was just telling a friend about this dub when it came out last year - warning him to steer clear and stick to sub. I may rewatch sometime in the future if that's the case.

I'm a dub first person as well as long as it's good. But increasingly I find dubs don't match subs and I usually find myself switching over to sub more and more consistently these days, including this Netflix Eva release.

Always enjoyed the elevator scene. Always enjoyed the scene where
[Show spoiler]unit 01 is holding kaworu
. In fact, that's my favorite and most memorable moment from the entire franchise. Whether these were intentional or not doesn't really matter to me. I like them regardless.

I appreciate what both scenes are doing, but both were so distracting that they pulled me out of the moment. My mind can't help but realize that it is a literal static image. Some blinking or eye moment (for the elevator scene at least) could've alleviated that but who knows. Didn't ruin anything, just made the moments a little less affective for me.

On the elevator scene- I have a friend who watched that high and it was the worst decision he ever made. It felt like centuries to him instead of a few minutes. Out of everything I can't understand why anyone would watch some anime high like Eva, Utena and of course Akira.

That's a memorable moment for sure.

For me, Unit 01 going berserk in 19 scarred me big time. That eerie screaming noise, the entire awakening as Shinji is yelling for it to move, the creepy way the Eva moves and acts like an animal, all of it is nightmare fuel. I have this fear of abnormal movement and this scene triggered that lol.

Up until that point I kind of saw the Eva units as robots or something similar to a Gundam, so to see this was completely unexpected.

The Eva scream, whenever used, is haunting. And perfect.

That moment elevated the series from "great" to "HOLY ****". If anything, I'd argue that that may have contributed to the initial disappointment that some (not me) had with the episodes that followed, because nothing after that really matched that moment.

That's how I'd describe it too. It was at that point where the series did a 180. Episode 8 when Asuka is introduced and then episode 19 were the big shifts.

Blame Funi for bad dubbing, and Anno for perfectionism.

Still.......would it be Eva without the "CON-GRAD-U-LATIONS" scene, and Shinji's rant.

I doubt they have the rights indefinitely, but I’m sure they locked it down for a few years at least.

Argh, I've been trying to post since Wednesday but my posts seem to go to limbo! I'm a new user on this forum but it's the first time on forums that this has happened to me. Maybe my account is setup incorrectly… I’m posting this one without any links hoping it can get through.

Anyway, not sure if you’ve discussed this already (I checked some pages back and I didn’t find it) but there will be a re-release of the 2015 blu-ray boxset coming July 24. There will also be 8 individual releases.

I don’t think we will see English subs but here’s to hoping, especially since khara was involved in the subs. Pre-orders are up!
