I haven’t seen it. But according to Wikipedia the musical is based on the 1960’s movie. So is the 1960’s one a musical?

I saw John Carter in an empty theater. I really liked it. At the time I thought it was better than Avatar and most big budget action flicks coming out.

It's not, no. It's a really good film, though. It's actually the only version I've seen. I fell asleep halfway through the 80s one.

It's not.

It was made in like six days. It's super quick and dirty cheap filmmaking.

Well yeah. It was directed by Roger Corman.

The '86 version.

The 1960 Roger Corman film isn't a musical, but it's a very funny comedy, filled with MAD-magazine-esque "sick" humor. Definitely worth a watch.

I could see that if it's the version you first became used to. I personally don't care for the narration or the ending.

Harrison sounds like he's half asleep. It's the worst, most clunky narration in film history. Especially the bit after Batty dies. Ugh.

Definitely. I seem to recall reading somewhere that he didn't want to do it? Perhaps that explains the nonplussed delivery, or perhaps that's not true at all.

And now which version of the 80's version do you prefer?

I personally like the one with the alternate ending with the giant plants destroying cities.

There's footage in Dangerous Days of Harrison recording it and saving it's weird and it's clear he doesn't want to be doing it.

He didn't wanna do it, no. You can ever hear his outtakes in the Dangerous Days documentary in which he basically mad-mouths the lines he was given in between takes. He insists that he delivered it to the best of his ability, although Katherine Haber said otherwise in the earlier Channel Four documentary (she said he deliberately botched the voice-over in the hope that it wouldn't be used at all).

Ah, that must have been where I heard that. It definitely makes sense and I can't say I blame him either.

Yes! I much prefer the original, dark ending. It's how the play ends, and should have been how the movie ended. Too bad test audiences wanted a happy ending.

The main problem with Avatar (the James Cameron movie, not "The last airbender) is that the movie kinda sucked.

Also I seem to be stuck like a broken record in this thread.

I like the plant apocalypse ending, but it does go on for too long.

I like the live activity n Disney movies around that time.
John Carter, Tron Legacy, Lone Ranger, Tomorrowland. All fun and well done for the most part.

Lone Ranger is a great 15 minute chase sequence that's unfortunately stretched to 150 minutes.

I don't hate Lone Ranger, but it's definitely overlong. I also think the opening is built wrong. The action scene that kills the Lone Ranger's brother is smaller than the opening action sequence that derails the train, which feels really odd to me. Shouldn't it be an ascending series of action instead of these ups and downs?

It's overstuffed with subplots and little characters that don't contribute much of anything, but hot damn, that final action sequence is some of the most fun to be had with over self-indulgent messes of action movies.
