I don't know which song you are talking about, but removing any part of irony as an attempt to "improve" a song has never really made for a good cover tune. I'm with Owl on this one.

Yeah. He was already sick for a while (in one of the extras for a recent Criterion Suzuki blu, he is clearly seen having health troubles and needing a respirator) so it's not surprising. Also the whole being 93 thing.

That pricing error actually makes it 60% off. Just a steal.

I'm not joking, he steals from people and takes their work and claims it for their own, and then bullies them people. He's a horrible human being, doesn't contribute anything to society.

Is it okay if it's the original that's just slowed down? Cause I like this a lot more than the original speed version:

Yes...seriously. You're absolutely right. Another good example is taking the amazing Depeche Mode song "Enjoy the Silence" and re-recording it with synthesized male/female vocals and piano for the recent Ghost in the Shell trailer:

Terrible! Butchering Robert Palmer, The Proclaimers, the Ramones and now Depeche Mode. I've had it!

I love hearing the new versions of songs... the original still exists so its not really doing any damage lol

Besides this is the piece used for ACFW without the 'horror sounds',

I think its a great cover, very beautiful voice.

Hey Polaroid, another off-topic Criterion post, but I finally saw Knight of Cups last night and I'm still trying to figure out what I watched. It's gotten to a point where Terrence Malick's films are now called "Visual poem art installations". I mean, I did not once get restless from watching the film (as I am well prepared for a Malick flick), but I think this one didn't quite work (just like Scorsese's Silence didn't work). I'm wondering if Malick's forthcoming film Song to Song is going to be another carbon copy of Knight of Cups. Hmmm. He's getting a bit too predictable with that voice-over, incoherent style of his.

I agree, they are getting too similar, but I still enjoy them and can enjoy the beautiful imagery and music!

His next film (Radegund) looks like it is going to be very different and more back to his roots, even a different cinematographer (jörg widmer, Pina (criterion related!!!)!

More than anything, I think of Knight of Cups as a hipster Michelangelo Antonioni film, so to speak. It does not strike me as an overtly cerebral film, but more as a spectacular visual work that serves as a reflecting pool that each of us can observe in different ways in the context of how it applies to our own lives. I get the impression that Malick's Song to Song will be much of the same.

I reviewed Knight of Cups in the dedicated thread for that movie, but I'll repost it here...

[Show spoiler]Part of me is inclined to say that Terrence Malick has finally made the movie that his detractors have accused him of making all along, in that it could just be a series of beautiful images and random voiceovers with no substance. I would say that Knight of Cups is a film that must be seen multiple times in order to process the story, but I don't know if there's anything to process, because this is a truly improvisational film where every viewer is free to draw different interpretations.

That said, I like the movie. I somehow related to every "major" character in the film, and I have to give a tip of the hat to Malick for using images without tangible context to evoke my empathy. I could relate to Christian Bale's midlife crisis of sorts, because I often get the feeling that, like the knight of the story referenced by the title, I've lost focus of my fundamental character because of so many diversions around me. Although I'm not a parent, I also get Brian Dennehy's wish for his sons to have a better existence. I identified with Natalie Portman's sense of guilt and responsibility. I also identified with the seemingly carefree wistfulness of a few of the other women in the film.

This movie is basically a reflecting pool from which viewers draw parallels to themselves and their own lives. I guess that all movies are reflecting pools in the same sense, but both the good thing and the bad thing about Knight of Cups is that it makes this so obvious.

If you want to look at beautiful women for two hours, then you're in the right place. We've got Natalie Portman, Freida Pinto, Cate Blanchett, Teresa Palmer, Isabel Lucas, and my favorite, Imogen Poots. They all have this fantastic glow to them as they do interpretive dances around the screen while Bale's character wanders in and out of the frame. Like Malick's To the Wonder, characters are not so much acting here as they are dancing in a ballet, and it's an oddly wondrous thing to watch.

I'm reminded of Michelangelo Antonioni's films starring Monica Vitti, Alain Delon, Jeanne Moreau, and Marcello Mastroianni, where I'm expected to empathize with beautiful people who all won the genetic lottery and who all dress to the nines. The surprising thing is that I actually end up doing so.

Knight of Cups is basically a sensory overload of sunlight Los Angeles buildings, nighttime cityscapes, expensive suits, and gorgeous legs in strappy high heels. I don't love the movie in any concrete sense, but I enjoy the eye candy.

This is not Terrence Malick firing on all cylinders, but I don't think that it's a shallow film either. I recommend, as long as you know what you're getting into.

Nope, didn't work too well in my opinion. It's Scorsese's epic misfire. Not an enjoyable film to watch by any means.

I agree. I hesitate saying that I like "new versions" as a rule, but like any cover, if it works for me I'm not opposed to it. And I have to say that with covers, I prefer if the cover artist actually does something new and different with the song. If they're just doing the same old same old, I wonder what the point is.

On edit: I remember an oh-wow moment many, many moons ago when at a party I heard a friend of mine do "Johnny Be Goode" as a slow blues. Just knocked my socks off, and I've played it that way a few times myself, and typically freaked people out.

Likewise, way back in the day, I had a recording of John Denver (as part of the Mitchell Trio) doing a slow version of the Beatles tune "She Loves You", and I've played it that way ever since (and again, usually freak people out with it).

I don't know the original's title, but the lyrics go, "... everything is wonderful ... ." Really overly sweet, optimistic pop song, but the do-over has a woman singing, "everything is wonderful ... ," and she is clearly in distress, breaking voice, beyond screaming, etc. It was a very ironic rendition. I heard it once, either 80s or 90s.
