Let me explain. let's say there is a video player, the video player get's the data and keeps statistics if the stats are bad, it can send "degrade quality" if the stats are too good and it can go higher it can send "push up the quality". So if you are in sweet spot there is no reason to send back feedback, if on the other hand it needs to lower or up the quality it needs to send a signal but we are still taking just a few bits. nothing compared to me typing this post. the simple fact that you were able to pick something to watch is proof that you have way more BW then is needed for the adaptive streaming signal. It is not like the data that is sent to you needs to be sent back so the guy there can see if the playback quality is good enough so he can decided to change it or not. |

My internet and home theater usage throughout the year is fairly constant. Below is a graph that shows my power usage over the past year:
[Show spoiler] Notice that my power usage peaks, more than doubles even, during the coldest months of the year. My total expenditure on electricity over the past year was $1818.17. The energy star rating on a typical 65" LG LED TV states that the annual operating cost is $21 PER YEAR. That is 1.16% of my entire annual electricity expenditure. Reducing my TV viewing time clearly is not going to do much to lessen my carbon footprint and I won't save much money in the bargain, either. You can find the energy star rating of any make and model of TV online. Best Buy's website, for one example, provides this information on every TV that they sell. ![]() With that "logic" it wouldn't hurt to have 10 Gbps internet service, either. No one said that having symmetrical internet speeds "hurt" anything; it is just not necessary for streaming videos. Your career background only makes your inability to understand this all the more confounding. If I have no problems streaming from 9 out of 10 sources, where do you the think the problem most likely lies? With my ISP, my home network, or with the one problematic provider? Receiving a reliable video stream depends on far more than just how good of an internet service/ connection I have. You ought to know this, but it seems to escape you every time. If you want to incorrectly think that a 3.5 Mbps HD stream is equivalent to a blu-ray disc that can reach a maximum bitrate of 48 Mbps, then be as delusional as you wanna be; no one really cares if you can not tell the difference between them. Everyone else here can. Last edited by Vilya; 07-28-2019 at 12:34 AM. |

If I had a household of 10 with each person using a 65" LED 4K TV all running for the same amount of time they would still only represent 10.5% of my annual power expenditure assuming that these squatters did not also increase the power consumption anywhere else, which of course they would, and that would make that percentage far lower. Aren't you the catty one?
![]() The irony is that he retired in 1996 well before the internet even existed for many people, yet magically his work experience somehow applies here and now 23 years later. It's actually worse if it did apply as he is still wrong virtually every time that he posts on the subject. Last edited by Vilya; 07-28-2019 at 01:08 AM. |

Notice how I put your large gif behind spoiler tags in my reply? It's just my small way of saving movies, TVs, and the environment. ![]() ![]() I have video games that need playing, so away I go. I hope the world doesn't end while I'm gone. ![]() Last edited by Vilya; 07-28-2019 at 03:46 AM. |

You continually demonstrate your lack of knowledge, lack of memory, or both. https://www.internetworldstats.com/emarketing.htm I did answer your previous question even though your current wording of it is not only NOT an actual question, it is a nonsensically obvious statement. "If blah blah, then nyuck nyuck" is a conditional statement, not a question. If there is a problem, something is wrong. ![]() ![]() You failed to answer my questions, so I will give you another shot at it: If I can stream perfectly with 9 out of 10 streaming sources, where does the problem most likely exist? My ISP, my home network, or the ONE problematic provider? Here's a hint: it is not the first two. Last edited by Vilya; 07-28-2019 at 03:27 AM. |
