Warner Bros Criterion Sale this Week

Hey guys, I'm new to the site and I'll be blowing a good amount of money when the B&N sale starts this week. I only own two Criterions (The Blob and Sweet Smell of Success).

I've been researching what's in the Criterion Collection and the movies that caught my eye and hope to get this week are: Badlands, George Washington, Jules and Jim, Autumn Sonota, 400 Blows, Breathless, Paths of Glory, Hunger, Fish Tank, Paris, Texas, Y tu mama tambien, Being John Malkovich, Bicycle Thieves, Vivre sa vie, Make Way for Tomorrow, Like Someone in Love and the John Cassavetes Five film set.

I wanted to know what your guys thoughts are on the Cassavetes box set. I don't really know what to expect with that one. I'm a really big fan of Derek Cianfrance and he talks about Cassavetes' influence on his work so that's the main reason for me wanting to check that out.

I like sad movies so I was also wondering if you guys could point out anything else that I probably missed. Thanks.

Here's my collection: https://www.criterion.com/my_criteri...?sort_by=title

Here are some I'm considering buying:
The New World
Heaven's Gate
Anatomy Of A Murder
Stalker
Roberto Rossellini's War Trilogy
L'argent
Straw Dogs
His Girl Friday
Band Of Outsiders
Blind Chance
The ones are your list sound good, but I'd even more suggest All that Heaven Allows and Bigger Than Life.

When it comes to sad movies (in the Collection), my recommendations would be Breaking the Waves, Watership Down, Pan's Labyrinth, and maybe Eraserhead.

Did the same thing a few years ago when I got a small promotion with an oversized salary increase. Invested in Criterions from BN for the following year.

Of course, people are STILL saying BN is about to go under, but if that happens, I have the consolation of a ton of quality blu to watch and rewatch. I like that you're going for it.

My point is that as long as Olive Films still has the rights to it, Criterion can't release it.

100%. Since they've had the rights back for sometime and haven't just re-released the previous disc, I think are most likely, as rumored, working on a new 4k master and will be using that for a new edition.

Criterion should just buy out Olive Films then and make the world a better place for us all. Stick an olive in it, it's done.

Based on what I own, I'd recommend Blow Out, Rosemary's Baby, Hara-Kiri (Japanese), Ace in the Hole.

In the past there were occasionally Noon or 6pm Monday starts, but I haven't seen one of those in a few years.

Sale should be live in store at opening and prices should automatically come up 50% MSRP, but if you're first in store always check the prices.
Thank you.

I went into B&N yesterday but the sale doesn't seem to have started yet. Is it next Sunday?

While the Criterion is OOP, The Man Who Fell to Earth is one of the saddest movies I've ever seen.

I was just thinking the same thing. I revisted this film on my OOP Criterion Blu Ray last night. The PQ and AQ on it are jaw dropping. This is probably my 6th viewing of this film, including watching it on the big screen when it was first released.

This film has unlimited rewatch value for me. I always find something new in it. Masterful storytelling with only a few glitches (I believe the Mary Lou/Gun scene is unnecessary), and remains one of my favorite films of all time.

The ending is so sad, and, yet, so sublime. Beautiful work.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a sad movie too. I know this will bring jokes but I mean this unironically.
