I would still saw the UK version is a better choice (if Region Free, 20th Century is hit or miss with that), and the cover doesnt look atrocious.

Just noticed the Alfred Hitchcock set dropped $44.00 to $199.99 and the Bond set (without book) dropped to $179.00. Good time to pre-order?
I'm curious to know if there's a difference between the "Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection - 15 Movies [Blu-ray]" on amazon.ca and "Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Limited Edition) [Blu-ray]" on amazon.com? I pre-ordered the "limited edition" on amazon.ca when it was announced, but since then it was changed to the 15 movie set. The ASIN numbers are different too... hmmm! The UK set is tempting with price and appearance, but I don't like taking risks with region-based stuff. There's a possibility of the UK release being region free, but there's no confirmation if it is. |

As far as I know, there's only one edition in North America, though there is a Limited Edition UK version.
Both have great covers, so it's a tough one. Have a feeling the UK set will drop in price quicker though. Can't wait for this. Selling my dvd masterpiece collection wasn't exactly a regret, but I missed it rather quickly. |

Had to redeem myself from earlier... when I posted the .com price. The CANADIAN version of AMAZON now has Prometheus 3D collector's edition up on their site properly... with a price of $29.99 vs Futureshop's $34.99.

I'd support Criterions if they had a reasonable price premium. But since they typically cost double, triple, or quadruple I don't bother.

Not to turn this into another Criterion debate, but there's a reason they're more expensive. It's not exactly cheap to purchase distribution rights, create a high quality transfer, put together special features, and actually put some art direction into the design. The fact that most of the films they release don't have the huge markets new releases and popular catalog titles do doesn't exactly help either.
I say this as someone who can't afford most Criterion releases myself. |

agree and nice point antoinedoinel, it is not the same thing when you have an old film collecting dust in a closet somewhere and think "even if I charge 5$ I am still making money" and having to pay a large amount to a different studio in order to get the rights to distribute it.

Yes I know if one wishes to be anal about it, the criterion one sometimes goes on sale for $40-44, and the regular version fluctuates from $9.99 to $19.99. But for the sake of discussion, a 2x, 3x, 4x order of magnitude is typical. Some are harder to demonstrate such instant and glaring proof, as they exist only in criterion format. But even then, no more than superficial awareness of common movie pricing will show the bulk fall in a range of $15-$25 dollars, and unless one is doing all kinds of consumer gymnastics, Criterions start around double. If you are saying 'most' Canadians follow this board, and wait for the annual B&N sale, and order multiple movies to get a spiff, and endure B&N's awful service, then I respectfully think you and I have a different idea of what 'most' Canadians do. Until Criterion starts putting out Don Cherry and wrestling titles anyway. Last edited by Neild; 09-04-2012 at 12:14 AM. |

For the record, I paid $31.99 for the Criterion version and $9 for the regular, a 355% upcharge for a transfer difference that's barely perceivable and extras that aren't that mind blowing. Hey, a really obsessed person could visit multiple Best Buy locations today and try to get it for $27.64 by stacking the labour day against Amazon's PB. But these are short term one day price beat examples. I'm not a self-professed 'expert', just a regular person who knows that most movies cost < $20 and most Criterion editions cost > $40. But then again I'm not trying to justify my consumption of overpriced movies either. |
