Watched Beowulf tonight on Netflix streaming 3D.
The movie started off kind of odd and disjointed but got much better as the story progressed. I really enjoyed the ImageMovers animation, monster fighting, and epic soundtrack. It's no masterpiece, but it's certainly a fun fantasy flick. The 3D has nice depth and roundness and is used effectively to help tell the story and visualize the action. Zemeckis is pretty aggressive with the convergence, regularly placing objects and characters well into negative parallax. The 2.39:1 framing cuts off the tip-top of heads quite frequently, and it would be interesting to compare it to the expanded IMAX version. There are a lot of "pop-out" moments. Some of them are extremely gimmicky, pointing sharp objects at the audience, and others glide smoothly with the story. Other highlights include a particularly memorable reverse-tracking shot, flying away from the village and into the demon lair, and the demon witch's tail, which slithers around quite eerily in stereo space. Having seen Zemeckis' other two 3D features, I think his 3D artistry dramatically improved with each of his succeeding movies. Beowulf lands square in the middle. Depth is more consistent than in The Polar Express, but the visuals and story-boarding don't sweep you off your feet quite as often as in A Christmas Carol. I'm thankful that I got a chance to see this movie in 3D and would love to add it to my collection if it becomes available on disc in the future. Watched Green Lantern. Movie is alright, if a bit slow. 3D is way below par. In particular, they could have done a whole lot better with the CGI sequences.

My latest haul. Watched MvA last night and thought it was great! Not sure if I'll ever watch Michael Jackson but couldn't pass it up at only 5 bucks.

Finished watching AIW tonight. Great 3d, especially for a conversion.

Watched both Alice in Wonderland and Jurassic Park in 3d yesterday. Both very good conversions but both had a handful of "bad" 3d scenes. The most notably bad, IMO, being the scene at the beginning of JP when the lawyer is on the raft. He looked like a cardboard cutout on a boat or something

2 very bad experiences.
texas chainsaw and night of the living dead 3d re-animation. (spiders/texas chainsaw/night of the living dead re-animation are now my current worst 3d experiences) then open season = alright, it looked good but i couldn't ultimately finish it... wasn't doing anything for me. megamind = enjoyed it overall, jonah hill's character brought it down and it dragged a bit but i liked it. I bought and watched Rise of the Guardians, Wreck-It Ralph and The Hobbit and they're all great movies with amazing 3D.
