oh.
If Tarantino directed Star Wars there would be 5 or 6 scenes that would go on for 20 min a piece with Mark Hamill and the new bad guy tossing pretentious dialogue back and forth to each other before the scene erupts into over the top lightsaber violence. LOL

Quite the contrast to Lucas dialogue writing skills and would add a whole new dimension to Harrison Ford's classic line "You can write this but you can't say it"

I think it's important to keep episodes 7-9 tonally and stylistically similar to the other episodes. i see them as the core stories. That's why for Episode 7 I would nominate Speilberg. He would deliver a solid film with a good script. I know everyone mentions Indy 4, and he bares responsibility for that. However, I never felt his heart was in it. He pretty much said he was done with Last Crusade. Give him a good script I think he'll deliver. Once you lay the foundation I would bring someone like Frank Darabont in for Episode 8. This is the meat of the story and where you develop the characters. He would be terrific at that. Then for Episode 9 bring in someoen capable of delivering a satisfying and epic conclusion. Maybe someone like Joe Johnston who cut his teeth on Star Wars. After that if you want to give a Boba Fett movie to Tarantino or a KOTOR movie to JJ Abrams, go ahead. Let them have complete freedom to do as they wish. However, the episodes or core stories I think need to have a familiar feel.

JJ Abrams has already ruined Star Trek (IMO) so why not let him see if he can ruin Star Wars more than Lucas already has.

He's already composed music for the franchsie with Disney's new Star Tours ride and his scores for The Incredibles, Star Trek and John Carter show he can work very well in the sci-fi action space-opera genre. It also helps that he's one of the best composers working in film today.
I would love to see Harry Gregson-Williams take the job. His sweeping score for Kingdom of Heaven was incredible. If we really want to throw the job to someone with a knack of Epic Scores, why not Clint Mansell or Howard Shore.

Hope it'll end the debate about Lucas originally planning 9 eps (he did, I was reading about that in Starlog and various other mags when I was a kid, around ESB), but probably not.

I don't understand how he could say that, when Star Wars is in the genre of Sci-Fi, and Steven has certainly been at the helm of some great Sci-Fi during his career.... plus he directed a portion of Revenge of the Sith, considered to be the best of the prequels. It's a shame, I was really looking forward to seeing him do more. Now he just wants to do historical pictures...

Yes, but it's important to note, Disney never offered SW to Tarantino or Snyder. Their "pre-declines" remind me of teenage girls swearing they're not going to dance with a guy, while the guy never had any intention of asking to begin with.

I think he's doing it out of respect for his best friend's feelings. There may be more here than meets the eye.

....so what would Steven Spielberg say if George goes up to him and says, "Would you be interested in directing Episode VII? I have the script and I'll run it by you to see what you like and what changes you'd make..."

Yeah, that's definitely the vibe I got as well.

The genre bit is just too silly to be a serious response. As already noted, Spielberg is no stranger to sci-fi pluuuuuuus Star Wars has never been hard sci-fi anyway.

It's always been more fantasy/adventure and that's Spielberg's freaking wheelhouse.

Well, he had War Horse last Christmas and Lincoln now. But the one before that - from only a year ago - was TinTin and he's currently working on gigantic sci-fi blockbuster called Robopocalypse which is as far from being a historical picture as you can get.

Yup, a robot uprising is definitely not an historical event.

Yet.
