I bought a really cheap copy of The Exorcist III today at a buy/sell shop.

Watching the film for the first time tonight.

Hope I'm not disappointed!

...the original is in my top 20.

I agree, I really like the third movie a lot. To me it is the only sequel that can stand alongside the original. It has great performances, some really creepy scenes, a couple great funny scenes and an awesome scene that is guaranteed to scare.

I agree. If you go in expecting something the Caliber of the original you may be disappointed, but if you go in expecting a fun 80's/90's style horror film within the Exorcist universe you'll likely really enjoy it. This is a film I've grown to enjoy more and more over the years since my first viewing.

Not sure if you're joking or not, but they do. Dominion is the only one not available separately.

Man, Exorcist III blew me away, It was the best one in the set aside from the original. It was not only written by William Peter Blatty but was also directed by William Peter Blatty and he did a hell of a job on it IMO. Alot of the dialogue reminded me of his other directorial effort The Ninth Configuration. The plot was engaging the cinematography was great. George C. Scott was perfect for the starring role, I love his acting. Side note: if you've not seen The Changeling, SEE IT. Brad Dourif did a bang up job and they brought back Jason Miller which was a pleasant surprise. He was so good in the original.
I didn't care for the last two installments, Stellan Skarsgard just did nothing for me. The scene with the CGI hyenas attacking the boy looked ridiculous. I just couldn't get into them.
Then of course the original is a classic, I enjoyed the directors cut. Am I mistaken or wasn't the creepy piano interlude played more in the theatrical version. I thought the scene where Max Von Sydow first arrives and is standing in front of the house the music kicks in. I remember that being one of the really iconic scenes in the film with the music really setting the atmosphere. It played only once in the directors cut toward the beginning when Ellen Burstyn is walking down the street, then that was it. They should have included it more in the directors cut, my only complaint. The reintroduced footage was fantastic. Overall, I enjoyed the directors cut over the original theatrical version.

You're in for a treat, Exorcist 3 is great. Was never given a fair chance after that trash Exorcist 2. The nurse scene still gives me goosebumps.y/

OT: Funnily enough I saw Ric Flair at work yesterday

I second the "Ninth Configuration" recommendation.

Awesome movie that received a great HD transfer from Hen's Tooth last year (too bad the artwork is rather naff).

Glad you enjoyed Exorcist lll. It's really the sequel to the first film IMO. Also, I can honestly say that I enjoy "The Version You've Never Seen" or Directors Cut or whatever you want to call it. I find myself watching that version only these days when I used to only watch the original version. The Exorcist is my favorite horror film or "theological thriller" as Blatty calls it, and will never be de-throned.

As far as the music goes, I think you've confused various ads for the movie, with the actual movie itself. The song has been featured in just about every ad, pay cable ad's, and TV ad's for the past forty plus years.

It looks i'm one of the few who doesn't like Exorcist III, except the nurse scene.
I rather Exorcist II, the only good sequel to the original imo, even though we can't compare it to the first film. At least it had Linda Blair on the cast and a great soundtrack.

I agree with this 100%. The Exorcist still scares the crap out of me. I saw it over 40 years ago, and it still affects me greatly. I'm not so familiar with the sequels as I haven't seen them but only once or twice, but not in a long time. As big of a fan as I am of the Exorcist, I still haven't picked up this Anthology. I do own the 40th anniversary disc, but I still haven't watched it yet. It's definitely going to be watched this up coming horror season. My wife doesn't know it yet, but she's going to be with me when I do watch it. I refuse to watch this alone. She doesn't like the movie but that's ok, as long she's in the room, I'll be ok.

Watched this for the first time last night.

Wow...what a good movie!

Not a perfect sequel by any means.

The story tends to meander a bit at times.

Of course not as powerful or well-crafted as the original.

But I have to say that part III is A LOT scarier than the original imo.

There were a few scenes that genuinely scared the crap out of me, which is not something I ever felt watching the first one.

That scene in the confessional booth towards the beginning...I's SCURRED!!!!

The climatic scene at the end though was a tad over the top imo.

Classic example of how a scene can veer into the level of caricature when left in the hands of a bad director...or in this case a novelist with no directorial experience.

Overall I was not disappointed.

This was the true sequel to The Exorcist.

...part II does not exist.

Studio tampering and forced reshoots is what caused much of the over-the-top climax. The studio wanted more "bang".

Funnily enough, Blatty was forced to include the climactic exorcism scene by the studio, who felt the movie had to be more similar to the original. It would've been a lot more restrained if he had been allowed more creative freedom. You can read a bit about it here.
