![]() I thought Aladdin and the Beauty and the Beast remake did a great job of keeping the spirit of the original, while also doing something different with the story and characters (Jasmine is different from the original). It seemed Disney didn't want to take any creative chances with the Lion King, but I understand. Last edited by Kizzo; 10-13-2019 at 02:43 PM. |

I mean, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin didn't venture that far away from the source material or change that much. They were all basically the same.
I love all three either way, I just like Lion King more because they had the sense not to fix what's not broken. |

Yeah.....this wasn't good. It's totally unnecessary. Every aspect of the movie is inferior to the original. Visually gorgeous, but that's about it.
Wait, I love Seth and Billy as Timon and Puumba, along with J.D and Shadidi as young Simba and Nala, and the music's good as always, but it's just the original, so that was obvious. This is Disney's version of Gus Van Sant's Psycho. Wake me up when Disney does a remake for The Lion King 1 1/2. 2/5 |

Finally saw this on Saturday with my son. Absolutely amazing CGI, well animated too. But that's about it. A few new and extended scenes, but the rest is shot by shot remake of the original. There's no creativity at all, I wonder if Jon had full control. The characters felt lifeless. The voices really feel disconnected, like a bad foreign dub. Scar don't work at all, and I thought young Simba was voiced by a little girl. The film never engaged me into its characters.
I've said it a long while ago, they should just do 100% shot by shot and use the track from the original. At least their voices are more enthusiastic in the acting. I selected the wrong rating in my vote, should've been 2.5/5 stars. Oh well, maybe the technical aspects deserved it. |

I don’t think it fits the animation category. The intent was for it to look like a live action film. They also filmed portions of the movie as if it was live action using VR created environments in a physical sound stage/blue screen studio.
Sean Bailey, president of production for Disney considers it a hybrid (from The Hollywood Reporter): “But there are things in the movie that are going to be new. [And] it is a new form of filmmaking. Historical definitions don't work. It uses some techniques that would traditionally be called animation, and other techniques that would traditionally be called live action. It is an evolution of the technology Jon used in Jungle Book." |

I can understand the Oscars not wanting to nominate Lion King (they shafted Tintin, too), but to not even submit the movie for consideration is weird. Maybe Disney knew it wouldn't win so they wanna focus their campaign muscle on Toy Story 4.
Lion King should still factor into the VFX race, though. |

I kinda knew The Lion King remake was never going to be nominated. First of all, the original Lion King already gotten nominations before. Getting renominated for the same things makes no sense. Second, the Academy doesn't often nominate animated films that play into that grey area. For example, The LEGO Movie. That movie wasn't nominated at all for best animated film because it also had live-action scenes. If we count Lion King then where do we draw the line? Because a lot of movies heavily use CGI, like the MCU movies for example, but you consider them animated movies at all.
