The cop was a very boring role. DiCaprio made the right decision.

As the guy who wants to stop this thread dead in the tracks to whine about the book, he will tell you. The original script focused more on the cop. So the role was bigger and the Ernest character was much smaller.

"If you see one film in cinemas this year it should be Oppenheimer," Schrader said over the summer. "I’m not a Nolan groupie but this one blows the door off the hinges."

This movie. Does Not. Need 200 million dollars. That budget is absolutely ludicrous. Spielberg or PTA or Nolan would have made this for 80, at max 100. So I'd be happy to slice the budget in half.

I still maintain that Scorsese was wise to shift the focus of the book and that DiCaprio was right in not playing the rather ordinary role in which Jesse Plemons was eventually cast. |

What I'll add is your post is one of the most troubling statements I've ever read on this site, and we're looking at 15 years. Sure, we all get that certain films are made as Oscar bait, and scripts are massaged to ensure that they don't conflict with the generally accepted sensibilities of the Academy members. However, you seem to be suggesting that every time a filmmaker addresses a sensitive historical subject, the overarching and primary influence should be how a specific audience, in this case, the Academy and a slew of downstream critics, will react. That's not cinema, that's a cop-out. |

It was all salary. Leo made 40 million alone, so I'd assume the rest of the actors and production budget equaled 160 million. It is what it is. Quote:

Also let's not diminish Schrader as a sceenwriter of Taxi Driver only. He's a great filmmaker in his own right.
And in the recent pass is a better filmmaker to me than Scorsese. First Reformed, Card Counter > Irishman, Flower Moon |

But my favorite anecdote about Schrader is how he wrote the original draft for Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which in turn was rejected by Spielberg for being too heavy or something similar, but I get the dark feels of his influence all over those dysfunctional family dynamic scenes. Agree or disagree, Schrader is a welcome cinema wild card. |

The 200 million is not on the screen. It looks like an 80 million dollar movie at best. You see similar or better period design in tv shows. And no big stars apart from Dicaprio. Oppenheimer, a movie I dislike, is FULL OF STARS, and looks more expensive than Killers and cost half. |

I didn't say it was a good thing, but PS is out of line talking to the trades about the film he had no involvement in, when he just had dinner with Marty. It's some backhanded bs and is not out of hand to get called on. |

Schrader has the ability to get his own films made and acknowledges that he and Scorsese are making very different movies in this exact interview. I don't think he's bitter at all, just too old to bother with airs and graces when expressing his opinions.

Schrader and Scorsese are good lifelong friends, he likely told Scorsese his opinion at their dinner. If you'd followed their relationship you'd know that Schrader has always ribbed Scorsese. But it's always funny and good-natured. That's why when he gave his opinion publicly, he also mentioned having dinner with Scorsese and Scorsese's dog biting him. I don't think there's any backhanded malice intended.
