Okay you guys are right. Don’t fix it. Just cancel your order or hope the studio fixes it. It astounds me that I get so much grief over stating the painfully obvious.

Which is why I specifically said that I understand and agree that we shouldn’t have to do it, twice, in my post. I posted it, in fact, then sent the post to a friend and said “now you wait…even though I took great pains to acknowledge that argument, it won’t be five minutes and someone will restate it anyway as if I don’t respect it”. What’s the problem with doing BOTH? MUST I be totally dependent on the studios to get it right? Sorry, not gonna do that. If you want to, more power to you.

Fixing it is fine. No-one's saying you shouldn't be doing it. But repeatedly insisting that everyone should be doing it themselves doesn't actually help anyone else, nor does it send a message to the studios that this sort of utter incompetence is inexcusable in this day and age. For every person that could fix a botched release themselves there must be another 100 that can't and they shouldn't be penalised for not being a computer whizz. As I said, let's try and get the studios to get it right first time.

You paint yourself as a champion of both viewpoints but it doesn't come off that way, and I think you know it which is why you knew you'd get some pushback. It's your insistence that This Is The Way that's the niggling thing, it's myopic in the extreme to tell people that they MUST be doing this.

Another error found:

In Rocky IV from 10:17 to 10:24 Aspect ratio opens up to 1.78:1 (no black bars) then goes back to 1.85:1...

I have the 40th collection and the streaming 4ks for the first Rocky film and the director's Cut of 4.

Seems I should just stick with that for now.

Well, the fact is that this IS the way, but what grates on ME is people who flat-out say they don’t want to be bothered to learn this or do anything to fix it (totally fine) but then want to turn around and complain endlessly about these errors. It just comes off as “I want to whine about this forever, but not raise a finger to just be able to correct it”. I sort of feel like you should either enable yourself OR just deal with the fact that, as you say, QC issues these days are just rampant. You can complain to the studio, that’s great. But if you’re effectively going to put yourself in a position of being totally dependent upon them to fix the problem, you sort of have to just defer to them and hope they do. I dunno. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Yep. But when you have the aforementioned flatulent baboons running the show then you need to spend more money on hiring competent people to begin with, and clearly the people at MGM who prepared these releases do not have a literal clue as to what they're doing.

I said self-defeating cycle but it's more a self-fulfilling one I think, that if they don't release 4K because people won't buy it and then produce a set as spectacularly sloppy as this then people aren't going to buy it regardless, thereby fulfilling their prophecy that no-one buys 4Ks anyway. It's kinda like George Lucas' reasoning that no-one wanted the OG versions of the Star Wars movies after they released those terminally shitty old LaserDisc masters on DVD; the pushback was for the quality of the masters, not the quality of the films, but Lucas took it to be the latter anyway. And I can see MGM regarding the Rocky pushback in a similar way: "eh, consumers don't care about 4K after all".

But it's not. The consumer shouldn't have to buy a bunch of other shit and pick up a new skill because the big corps can't do their jobs properly. These UHDs are expensive enough as it is.

Pure conjecture and speculation on my part...but I wonder if the QC issues ultimately stem from the fact that a "boutique label" was going to originally release these before backing out and the project reverting back to MGM/SDS.

Noting that these new releases have down-mixes that are 16bit unlike 24bit....I wonder if Kino was the original label who was going to release these due to their partnership with MGM and their penchant for down-mixing and using 16bit audio....?

Never easy to take over a project mid-stream from anyone else and not expect some hiccups....not an excuse...just sayin.

But that's always been the case though, Crowe. We're entirely dependent on them to release these things in the first place and you must shirley realise that it's only a select few people who have the tech, the time and the wherewithal to correct them themselves. And we certainly couldn't do it ourselves in the pre-digital era, so maybe my own mindset is still stuck in that analogue past - despite having done several BD remuxes of my own for Grease, Mad Max, The Terminator and Smokey and the Bandit to reinstate the OG - and I get how frustrating it is for you to have all these people who could be doing it but can't.

Alas, we're not all on your level so complaining to the people who actually produced the things is about all we have open to us. It's not about putting ourselves in that position of total dependency, that's just how it's always been for 99% of people.

If you have a 5.1 or above system, if it's 2.0 stereo it most likely should be played back as matrixed surround, not two channel. Especially if it's any movie recorded in Dolby Stereo. You should be playing them as Dolby Surround or Neural X to begin with because that's how they were mixed and intended to be heard (though at least on my Denon AVR, and I believe most receivers, the Neural X option contains an inherently "veiled"/muddy center channel on 2.0 content so the Dolby Surround option is the only way to go).

I was told that Shout were the ones who were doing it, but they encountered so many problems that they just said "**** it, we're done". Perhaps this is indeed the reason why these releases are so poorly QC'd, Shout were dealing with a bunch of utter incompetents at MGM and decided to wash their hands of it. I don't rate Shout much higher on the competence scale but damn, if THEY decide that something's too messed up for them then it must be REALLY shoddy

Hell, I’m so clueless on these constant references to DIY remuxes, I’m always like, “Well, okay, when you’re done with your fix, how do you play it on the TV?” I simply don’t have the time and money to properly educate myself on this process, purchase all the necessary tech, then go through all the required labor, so I am at the mercy of the incompetence of those who get the money I do have.

Well it’s a highly-scientific process of dragging the file onto an external hard drive, and then plugging that into my player via a USB plug. I wouldn’t advise anyone try it without the requisite courses.
