I am sure you'll be able to get the set on its release for around $60 bucks. So, even if you dont rent them exactly the same number of times as I proposed, or use some other netflix or whatever, I am guessing you are still breaking even and getting value out of them.
That's just plain wrong. If you use Blockbuster, you'd have to hold onto the discs for 3 months in order for your calculations to be correct. Who holds on to the same 3 movies for three months? $20/per month for the service (three at a time).

So you're cool with spending $60 - $70 for the TE and then closer to $100 - $150 of the EE's later on? I'd much rather pay $150 for a seamless branching version. But I guess it's cool if you want to waste money. It's your money and you can spend it how you want. But don't criticize us for boycotting a sub-par version of the film when there's no reason that they couldn't release the EE's at the same time.

Peter Jackson wants to have input on the EE. So that is why they are not releasing the EE. You don't know what they talked about behind the scenes. Go ahead and wait 3 years for the EE. I bet you will buy the EE though right? If you were truly boycotting the studio you wouldn't buy the EE. Or any other movie from WB for that reason.

I don't think he said he was boycotting the studio, he was boycotting the release of the TE, like I am as well. I prefer to have the EE. Got nothing to do with boycotting the studio, just a personal choice.

There is nothing he can add to the EE thats not already in the current set. They just need to covert the current EE's to 1080.

There must be some reason he wants to work on them. Or it is just a conspiracy to delay the EE until before The Hobbit to increase sales.

That was me and your calculations are incredibly wrong IF you use BBonline and your cost/rental is low which mine is.

I have the 3 out at a time plan and I rent ~20 per month (which includes the 5 instore exchange) which is $1 per rental. If I rent the 3 LOTR movies 2 times a year that is $6/year times 3 years (I bet the EEs will come out in 2, but we will make it 3 for arguments sake) which is $18. This set will sell for ~$70 street value which saves me.....drum roll..........$52. $52 is a lot of money to me and renting is the no brainer option for me in my situation Who rents BRs for $5 a pop????? With todays online rental options, that is not even an option in my mind.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, since I watch these films in a ultra marathon run, all 3 would be watched in 1-2 days which would bring the rental cost to under $1 somewhere........renting is an even better deal than I made it out to be above

It's not a "waste" of money. Is buying a Ferrari a waste? Not to the people who can afford the luxury. Each individual weighs the cost w/ the return in light of his current financial situation. That gentlemen, is the beauty of the system. In some sense ALL luxuries are a waste. You don't NEED them to exist like food, clothing, and shelter. If you don't want to wait for the EE and can afford both versions, go forward w/o guilt! I'm buying both because fortunately I can afford the small luxury of doing so. You may not be and find it financially prudent to wait for the EE. If so, act accordingly w/o guilt.

They're greedy? Sounds like you're the one who has a hard time parting w/ your money. You don't want to fork over the dough for two versions. Now who's greedy?

this LotR fan doesn't think the studio "owes" me anything

i've bought the movies once
i'll buy them one more time

we haven't all spent hundreds on the different releases and think the studios should do us a favor and release THEIR movies the way we think they should

they are a business trying to make money
two separate releases is what they think will get them more money most likely, so thats what they are doing
it makes perfect sense to me
and also doesn't bother me
