granted, if you live somewhere where you can't install a deadbolt lock (apartment, renting a house), then you can only do what you can do. but you might also want to look into a door security bar. they're not a permanent installation and can offer better protection than a chain lock. [Show spoiler] and if you wind up having to go with the chain lock(s), make sure to use the longest screws you can in both the wall and on the door, itself. |

I need all new locks, any particular ones you'd recommend? I had those Kwikset "smart key" ones and they sucked balls.

https://www.amazon.com/Schlage-F51A-...age+door+knobs deadbolt: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0030ZM6JK...536340352&sr=1 we have these on every exterior door. i also installed long screws into each hinge; both door-side and jamb-side. i also put long screws into the strike plates and trim plates on the doorknobs and deadbolts. the screws on the jamb-side go past the jamb and into the studs inside the wall. i've also been looking at getting this for each exterior door: https://www.amazon.com/Door-Armor-MAX-Complete-Reinforcement/dp/B00E9ZGWH2?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1&th=1 |

Who’s my carpenter experts? sk33tr and Victory spring to mind. Long story short, we have a couple of doors not lining up and closing properly. These are the original doors to the house. So I’d like to not have them shaved down.
I just need a temporary fix until we can have the foundation looked at again. Looking at our bedroom door, it looks like it is uneven on the top right as you look at it. Do I put something behind one or a couple of the hinges Any advice or tutorial videos would be most helpful. Thanks. |

if it's closer on the side that's opposite the hinge-side, then you can put some shims behind the top, jamb-side hinge. that should bring the opposite side down a bit and should help even the gap. if it's closer on the hinge side, then you can put some shims behind the bottom, jamb-side hinge. that should bring the opposite side up and a bit closer. doing this, you can leave the door up and just loosen the screws that are on the jamb-side hinges (depending on which way it's leaning). you don't need to fully remove all of the screws; you can just loosen them enough to put a small shim in. if there are 4 screws in each side of the hinge, then remove the middle 2, put in a shim, then reinstall those 2 screws and tighten them all down. if they only have 3 screws, then just remove the middle screw, loosen the other 2, and insert the shim. also, if there are only 2 hinges on the door, be careful not to let the door swing when you loosen the screws on the hinge you need to shim. that can put too much pressure on the other hinge and cause it to bend/warp or strip out the screws. |

So take a look and let me know where you think the hinge wood should go. Quote:

BUT...from the pics you posted, it looks like you need to shim the bottom hinge, jamb-side. it looks like the bottom of the door, hinge-side, is closer to the jamb than the top is. so putting a shim behind the bottom hinge will make it come out a bit, and should make the opposite corner (top corner, latch-side) go up a bit. that should help straighten it out some. and the shim doesn't need to be really thick. if you have a piece of cardboard (from an old shipping box from amazon, etc.), you can use that as a shim. HOWEVER...over time it will compress a lot, so a more permanent solution would be an actual wooden shim. you can get a small pack of them from any home improvement store for a few dollars. you can also use wooden matchsticks. but, they're made from soft wood and will compress more than an actual shim made of a harder wood. plus, if you buy a pack of shims, you'll have some left over to use in case other doors start to sag or come out of square. with it being an original door, and depending on when the house was built, the foundation will have definitely settled and that will always cause the doors to come out of alignment and not close or latch properly. that's usually the first sign of the house settling enough to notice it.
