Arrow have confirmed that a DCP of Out 1 is being made, so start firing off all those tweets/e-mails to your local cinema. Even if it's a Cineworld.

So...who is Jacques Rivette? What's his type of work? Any comparisons to other movie-makers?

He's a major filmmaker from the French New Wave whose stuff has never really had proper releases on home video for a variety of reasons. He's a bit more openly fantastical and experimental as most of his most famous stuff comes from later in the movement than say your Truffauts and Godards that are comparably grounded.

I must say Arrow have never disappointed some really good titles! Hoping for some Japanese movies on Thursday, but if they don't no biggie.

Ordered the Rivette collection as fast as I could. What a blast. Amazing to be able to get this and the Yoshida box set as well. Yummy.

Wish they were releasing Eros + Massacre apart from the Yoshida set.

French New Wave, and I guess if he'd be compared to anyone, probably early Resnais, but he is sort of unique.

And as for my question about the price, I'm not saying it is a bad deal. It's a good deal for what you get, just not necessarily for someone buying in the US.

Criterion would probably sell something like this at a $120 price point, but many would wait for flash or B&N sales, where it would be a bargain. I realize this is apples and oranges.

Also the US announcements are not out yet, so I'll hold out hope that Rivette will be among them.

Thanks all for the info about Rivette. I get the feeling he will not be my cup of tea (really long arty films with Altman/Cassavettes type style don't do well with me).

75 quid on a blind buy is too much of a gamble for me....I'm out

It's an Academy title so won't happen. Unllike Grande Bouffe or The Beast there's not much of a case that it's an Arrow Video release at all making a crossover likely. The big US/UK Arrow Video box is looking almost certain to be Battles Without Honor and Humanity.

You can certainly see the mark of Feuillade on Rivette's work

I don't think they're making judgments of quality as to whether or not something gets ported over - I think it's just that Arrow, while it's establishing a foothold, wants to simply be Arrow Video without any smaller lines underneath it. Academy could come eventually but I fully expect them to eventually release actual "high art" stuff as Arrow Video material in the US to make this accomadation.

Fair enough, but I believe the Borowczyk titles were originally Academy, weren't they? The US versions look to be on the Arrow label. Of course Society and OUT1 couldn't be more different.

Edit: thanks MichaelB for the honest answer (even if not the one I wanted). Looks like I am buying yet another UK box set, but I won't complain when watching the films.

From Fran Simeoni on Twitter:

I am proud that Arrow is releasing wonderful niche titles like Yoshida and Rivette. If they work what riches could come next?

Got some potentially exciting Japanese stuff as a possibility already, but it all hinges on Yoshida so do your bit world!
