Everyone go to the Star Wars page on Facebook and check out the motion 360 view of Jakku. This looks awesome.

The rumor going around is that Max von Sydow plays a character named
[Show spoiler]Lor San Tekka, a man in possession of information vital to the quest of finding the elusive Luke Skywalker. As an elder of a village on Jakku, Lor San Tekka is sought out by the heroic pilot Poe Dameron to find the missing Jedi’s whereabouts.

If all the showings in the usa during opening weekend are sold out, how much $$$ does that add up to? $200 mill or $300 mill?

I don't think that's ever happened, so I doubt anyone will have any clue. This film will be nearing 4k screens. It hard to imagine all of them selling out for every showing.

I believe there is a limit as to how much a movie can make in a single weekend. Both Avengers and Jurassic World have proved that it can be over $200mil. My guess is somewhere between $205-210 million.

Jurassic World had a LOT of sold out showings in it's first week alone.

Sold out showings =\= every theater and every showing in America being sold out.

Just looking at the three days, the numbers might be lower than you'd think.

Let's say there are 4000 screens with an average of 250 seats per screen. (Multiplex theatres have gotten fairly small and the new lounge seat theatres, which includes at least some of the Dolby Vision theatres, have relatively few seats, even though the theatres are large.)

And there are five showings per day over three days.

That's a potential of 15 million tickets (not including any Thursday night shows), but not every show is going to sell out, especially day-time shows. So let's say it's 80%. That's 12 million tickets. At an average of $9 each (In 2014, the average ticket price was only $8.16), that's "only" $108 million over the first three days. That doesn't mean it can't hit $200 million - $300 million total in the U.S. for its complete run, which I bet will be 4 to 6 weeks, but let's not get crazy. Of course if it gets bad reviews and/or bad word-of-mouth after the initial screenings, it could do a lot less.

It will do better than Jurassic World, and that made $208m in its opening weekend. I'm thinking $250m or so. This is one of the most anticipated movies in years. I plan to see it at least once or twice opening weekend in IMAX, and the last movie I saw in theaters was Inside Out (I also plan to see a few others the rest of this year). Just saying it will get just about everyone out of the house and into a theater to see it ASAP.

A $250M opening smack-bang in the middle of the holiday season (as opposed to the summer) is a bold ask. I still think it'll have a massive weekend, may even get close to or top JW, but not much more on top.

It's true that the time of year is a factor. I guess I'm expecting this film to transcend that whole theory.

The force is strong with this film. Box office records could easily fall.

Even for just throwing out a random number, 4000 screens is low balling it. The new Fantastic Four movie opened at 3,995 theaters, before topping out at 4,004 theaters. The Hollywood Reporter was reporting back in April, that while Disney wasn't commenting, insiders were saying that The Force Awakens is going to have the widest release ever (a record held by The Twilight Saga: Eclipse with 4,468 theaters).

I realize fan hype is high, but general/casual movie-goers may have been turned off by the prequels and won't rush out the first week to see it. Those saying they are going to see it multiple times don't even know if it's good enough to warrant that yet, so I'd hold off on speculative viewing numbers.

No generation has been or will be turned off with Star Wars. The Phantom Menace wasnt that good - it didnt stop people from seeing the following bad prequels. With good reviews or not, this movie is going to make massive amounts of money.

And when those 3 and half and four star reviews come floating in, it's going to make more money on top of more money.

Someone else said 4000 screens and from the tone of their post, I assumed that was a real number. But even if it's 5000, that would only raise my estimates by another 25%. 4500 would raise it by 12.5%.

Gracias. Unfortunately I only had a few minutes to post; not enough time to upload them to another site and then link them.
