I really enjoyed IHON, but for whatever reason, when I think about thinning out my collection, this is one film that crosses my mind. I'll probably keep it, though.

The funny thing is that I enjoyed it more than OAHW, but I'm more fond of it probably because of the people involved - namely, Cary Grant and Hawks. I enjoyed one of the supplements on the disc that talks about OAHW really being a bro-mance and not so much about the women involved in the CG character's life.

The Princesses don't hang out with the nerds. The jocks don't hang out with the druggies, etc. Now, obviously, these aren't absolute rules or anything. But it is how it generally works. I mean, sure, a good friend of mine in HS was the girl who ended up being Prom Queen.* And believe me: That was not my clique. But barring the odd, random exception like that, it's very much as it is depicted in many teen films. It works like the jungle.

What The Breakfast Club did brilliantly, among other things, was distill that experience and everything that went along with it down into this group of characters, and what they represented and what they were experiencing.
I remember high school, though I graduated forty years ago in 1977. But, I can't recall the names of anyone I went to high school with, and have never gone to a reunion -- wouldn't be caught dead at one. It wasn't anything like THE BREAKFAST CLUB, but then I never got held in detention and was only vaguely aware of cliques because I was one of those loners that ignored most everyone and couldn't have cared less what was going on in school. I only went because I HAD to. I was also a complete movie nerd. I wasn't into sports, but I'd watch a sports movie, like SLAP SHOT! That was my idea of a sports movie -- still is.

One semester I took the journalism class and got the job of writing the movie reviews for my high school paper. I think I reviewed four movies but I can only remember three, BREAKHEART PASS, THE ADVENTURE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES' SMARTER BROTHER, and TAXI DRIVER. My reviews got good reviews from the rest of the class, but there was someone who had to point out that all the movies I reviewed were R-rated. My reply was, "But those were the only good ones." I was still only sixteen so I could get into R-rated movies without an accompanying adult for the most part, but my mother had to take me to TAXI DRIVER. She liked it more than I did. I gave it a mixed review. I have it on Blu-ray now, of course, and I still would give it a mixed review.

Anyway, THE BREAKFAST CLUB... I was twenty-six when it came out, and always willing to see anything. I went to it. Meh! It was a brat pack movie. That's all it'll ever be to me. My Leonard Maltin Movie Guide only gives it two and a half stars, and I agree with that, but it also says it's "filled with moments of truth and perception." I guess so. I really can't look at the thing anymore because I used to think Ally Sheedy was really cute, I mean like really cute, you know what I mean? Oh, girl.... what you did to yourself.

While I wouldn't say it's his best, Rio Bravo would be my favorite of his. I wouldn't mind seeing that get the Criterion treatment. It could benefit from a new scan/restoration.

I'd write the same thing, but RIO BRAVO would battle for fourth place. And I like EL DORADO as much as BRAVO, though it's not in the same league as his best. RIO LOBO not so much.

Thanks for the recommendations! With three minutes to spare, I picked up It Happened One Night as my blind buy, alongside Mildred Pierce and Breaking Point.

I've been iffy on screwball comedy in the past (I remember finding Bringing Up Baby absolutely excruciating in a college film class), but I enjoyed Arsenic & Old Lace a few months ago, have wanted to see more Gable (*swoon*) and more Capra, Molly Haskell's in extras, and I'm a sucker for a bonus film, so it won out.

I just bought this bottle of Spanish wine and I think I will drink it while I watch my Criterion blu-ray of Pan’s Labyrinth.

EDIT: I tried to change the orientation of the photo, but it keeps posting it the same way. I have never posted a photo on this website. I am clearly photo-posting challenged!

So I got an email notification that the sale was ending at noon EST, but it arrived in my inbox at 7:00 AM PST! I never received an email announcing that the sale was starting. In other words, Criterion didn't inform me of the flash sale until it was over! That's a little frustrating.

Glad everyone here got to take part in it, though. Sucks to be left out in the cold.

Isn't 7:00 AM PST, 10 AM EST? That means they informed you it was ending 2 hours before it did.

actually, according to your account, you had 2 hours to take advantage of the sale because 7 AM PST would be 10 EST.

Got these...

Barry Lyndon
Roberto Rossellini’s War Trilogy
The Last Metro
The Ballad of Narayama
The Sword of Doom
Vampyr
Children of Paradise
The Shooting/Rise in the whirlwind
To be or not to be

Mostly stuck to the wishlist except

Dropped 2 films I was almost certain to get when the sale started

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (because members suggested I should watch Twin Peaks series first)
The Piano Teacher

and these 2 came from nowhere to reserve a spot in my shelf

Children of Paradise
To be or not to be

Awesome price but I am planning to catch Season 1 & 2 at amazon prime video and then decide whether to get FWWM during B&N sale.

That's cool. I think it's on a few of the streaming services. I actually need to watch the show myself

Shipped. I always get giddy when they ship their stuff to me since they are based in NY but then I remember their warehouse is probably in Kentucky or something. At least it was.

Hopefully some of us will receive the goods by Saturday.

I posted yesterday, but it got lost in all of the posts and excitement...

Anybody seen The Lure? Or is anyone taking a chance on it? I think I'd like to see it. Usually I like really offbeat films. I had others on my wish-list, though, so I balked.
