What I don't like about Armond White's haters, is sort of the notion (exemplified in that chart kndy posted) that being a good film critic is all about liking the right films. It isn't.

I honestly don't believe he likes the movies he says he does. It seems like he purposely gives good reviews to bad films and vice versa just to make a name for himself and stand out from other critics. Just look at the list of films he claims are good and bad. I could understand liking a few films nobody else likes but there's no way he honestly likes ALL of the following films: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Norbit, Transformers 2, Land of the Lost, Death Race and Terminator Salvation. He's a complete fraud.

Revanche

Director: Gotz Spielmann
Writer: Gotz Spielmann
Mains: Johannes Krisch, Irina Potapenko, Andreas Lust

What a perfectly put together Drama/Thriller. I didn't really know what to expect from this movie and it turned out to be a little gem. The story was great, 1st time viewers give the movie a little time to develop because half of the movie is based on character development and the 2nd half is a straight thriller. Its also very unpredictable. Criterion ceases to fail with adding amazing films to their collection. Im pretty sure its allot of films that are great that's not in their collection but what i like the most is they make it very convenient to find great contemporary films.

At first i thought this was your average love thriller that you seen in modern action films but i was a fool to believe that "Zee Germans" would release something of that magnitude. I was sadly mistaken but back to the film the thing that stuck out the most for myself was the dedication of the wife. To do what she did can be looked upon in a positive or negative way. Another think is the suspense not knowing the decision of Alex.

At the end of the day this was a great purchase and an amazing little movie. I will be looking forward to watching this again and appreciate the amazing direction from Gotz Spielmann.

Highly Recommended.

5/5

let's say your neighbor is a child molesterer and I call you a child molesterer and someone says "hey it's not him, it's his neighbor" I can easily counter with "they're neighbors so same thing"?

You wouldn't say that, if you were one of "Zee Germans". Just because two countries border each other and share a common language, doesn't make them "the same".

Maybe you need to study up on your Geography.

I wonder why in Canada, (HMV) Criterion prices are from $35.99 to $44.99....and I don't like their cases, it's like a dvd.

1) they probably pay more to Criterion, or perhaps it's the exchange rate.

2) I don't think they're anything like DVD cases.... and regardless, it's not that important in the grand scheme of things.

EDIT:

Disturbed:

For what it's worth.... I imagined you quoting "Snatch" and got a laugh out of "Zee Germans"

Revanche is a damn good film. 5/5.

Had a chance to viddy The Thin Red Line this weekend. The presentation is impeccable. The scenes on the open sea I said WOW! The audio is great, too. The film of course is excellent (even if uneven).

Can't wait to see the Apocalypse Now BR in a few weeks

It was a war type of weekend for me I watched both Platoon and The Thin Red Line for the first time. I enjoyed them both but TTRL was the better film in my opinion. Beautiful cinematography, and amazing steadicam work. The whole battle for the hill was just technically amazing. The tracking shots through the grass while the explosions were going off was quite a sight to see in blu-ray. Definatly glad I blind bought it. Even though his other work didnt impress me, TTRL did.

They are a little more expensive in Canada probably due to importing them. Most things are a little more expensive in Canada. As for HMV, they don't have great prices.

The thin red line was so impressive. The booklet said it was mastered at 4k resolution, why does it seem that most other major video overhauls are
Mastered at 2k? Am I correct in assuming that the 4k mastering was why the video quality was so perfect?

All this talk about Revanche is making me regret not picking it up during the last sale...

That's usually why I either order them through AxelMusic ($36 CAD each shipped), or wait for the B&N 50% off sale.

The worst was when I tried to find Wings of Desire. $49.99. Wasn't to pleased about that.
