Its a resin prototype that's been painted, it'll look more like an action figure in the final form.

So I just watched Super 8 last night.

Do you think this new SW Ep. 8 is going to have and intolerable amount (well maybe not intolerable) but a giant s*itload of lens flare? I guess I haven't paid attention to the trailers to in any attempt to notice any.

Not trying to start a flame war here, just curious on civil thoughts.

Rain Johnson doesn't over use them, so probably not.

After all the sh*t JJ caught for having too much "lens flare" in the 1st Star Trek film and from what I've seen in clips/trailers, I'd say not too much flare in this one... Also this is Episode 7

JJ Abrams even said he wife told him he went overboard with the lens flares for Star Trek Into Darkness. Hopefully like most men he does what his wife tells him.

From the trailers I've seen, there seems to be no visible lens-flares. I wouldn't mind a few here and there. I personally love them

All of Abrams films to date have been shot anamorphic and Episode VII is no different. Anamorphic lenses flare easily. Now Abrams will deliberately shine lights off camera on set to cause flares but still, it will have some flare even if he didn't.

BTW: I think it's why they shot the first season of Fear The Walking Dead with anamorphic lenses. Lots of flares in that show (nothing really to do with JJ, just saying he's not the only one).

Anamorphic doesn't automatically equal lens flares though, as most (but not all) productions right up until the turn of the millennium actively avoided them and lit/blocked their shots accordingly; the previous 4 Star Wars movies shot anamorphic are a case in point, there's nary a flare to be seen. But now it's become such an 'in' thing that they even add anamorphic-style flaring to stuff shot flat, like Die Hard 5, Fincher's Dragon Tattoo and some of the MCU movies like Cap 1 and Avengers.

If JJ wants to avoid them to keep the continuity of that 'clean' SW photography then it won't be too difficult for him to do so.

Anamorphic lens flare is not uncommon in Star Wars, both artificial and natural. But that's a good thing, they're subtle and far in between that we don't even notice them. I actually like it but just not too much, only where it's logical.

We need something new to talk about, like maybe a full length trailer. That will give us enough to get going for 2 months.

There are actually quite a few lens flares throughout the films.

Okay, there are some. Thanks to aiman's cap above a few more come to mind from the space scenes in Phantom Menace, like when the shiny Naboo cruiser flies past Tatooine's twin suns (though ironically enough they're computer generated flares anyway, as are any in Eps II and III which were shot flat anyway). But I'm struggling to recall any from the OT, and the point stands: it's not necessarily a chronic affliction just because something's shot anamorphic to begin with.

I've always found another irony in that modern filmmakers love using anamorphic for that flary 'old school' look that it has, when the reality is that 'old school' filmmakers usually avoided flares at all costs (Dean Semler talks about it on the Mad Max 2 commentary). But not all of them did, natch. Senor Spielbergo's use of flares on CE3K is probably what imprinted that look onto JJ's young mind to begin with (it's his fault! ) and then Jan de Bont's photography for Die Hard introduced it to another generation.

He'll almost certainly tone it down significantly for Star Wars.

I agree. As Peter alluded to, I don't think JJ will be shining lights into the camera this time.
