Grave of the Fireflies

Directed by Isao Takahata
Animated
89 minutes

Like American Beauty, the opening narration describes the impending death of one of the two main characters. When he dies, the most uplifting part of the film occurs, but you might not understand how wonderful it is until you reflect on it after seeing the whole story.

It's about Japan in 1945 where a small village is bombed. A family is torn apart with the mother
[Show spoiler]killed
and the father
[Show spoiler]off fighting somewhere and possibly dead too.

This is about the love between a brother (Seita) and sister (Setsuko) and how
[Show spoiler]they try to survive on their own
. He's about 14 and she's about 4. It's probably the most beautiful relationship I have seen in any film. Their love is unconditional. It's partly based on a true story when the author tried to take care of his own little sister.

Setsuko is so brilliantly drawn and so realistic. We see everything unfold through the eyes of these children. She very seriously produces a little purse when her brother says they need money. There are moments of incredible happiness when the two are alone together. It will devastate you in a couple of scenes. If you don't love Setsuko, the film failed. I did love her.

Don't make the mistake of thinking this is a kids film because it's animated and has two children as the main characters. If you allow yourself to be caught up in this story and watch it on your own, you will probably find yourself sobbing at times.

I raised this to a 5/5 on my second viewing. I just can't find fault with it. It might make you think of deeper things such as the futility of war, good and evil and things we take for granted such as food and shelter. It might even improve your relationship with your siblings. Or it could just work as a story you watched on a screen.

I think it's an incredible film. It's also in Ebert's great movies.

You will never think of a can of fruit drops in the same way.

Thumbs up The greatest movies yet.

The Godfather Trilogy are the best movies Ive ever seen. Since I first saw The Godfather Part 1, I was blown away by the theme, the characters etc. Let me say that I was 10 years old when I saw it and after that Ive been a huge fan of this movie and Al Pacino is a fantastic actor. 10/10

I read your spoiler and I am gonna go back and look at that part u are referring to because Im sure there will be an explanation so stay tuned. U have to admit that beside that possible mishap the movie is damn good though and the ending was great! Got Em!!

I think without going back an viewing that part I may have it figured out. Peep this........
[Show spoiler]The elevator guy fell on top of the elevator and the one guy had been tryin to climb out of the elevator from time to time and I think he may have gotten the guys radio who fell and maybe they didnt show it or whatever but the security guys and the elevator guy all had radios. Again thats not a positive but he did fall on top and there was an opening through the elevator. How does that sound?
Got Em!!

The Taking of Pelham 123

1 out of 5 Stars

Rating: *

Dispatcher Walter Garber (Washington) is not having a good day. Already under investigation for taking kickbacks by his superiors at the transit authority he finds himself playing negotiator when a subway train is taken hostage and the leader (Travolta) happens to end up contacting him. I'll say it up front - I hated this movie. It's one of those films that could have been terrific but at the end I was like 'Are you joking????' I can't really tell you why the ending sucked so much without spoiling it, but for a film that spent almost all of it's runtime involving dialog between the two main characters the last act was horrible. Denzel is about the only decent thing in this mess but his talents are completely wasted. Travolta should really stop trying to be an action star and perhaps make another Look Who's Talking flick (perhaps Kirstie Alley can pop out some fat, scientologist kids in that one). Things would have been better if the always excellent John Turturro was the bad guy instead of having a side role. Pelham is the poster child for how a terrific flick can be completely ruined by a lame ending.

[Show spoiler]okay so lets say your right and he somehow without showing us grabbed the radio from the guy that fell on the elevator.. so tell me this, if no radio signals worked inside the elevator throughout the whole movie why did they all of a sudden work then? did the devil create sound waves as well? was he the inventer of HD radio...even if this horrible horrible obvious mistake didnt happen the movie still didnt do much for me.. the little back stories on who they were didnt work.. you just have a man crush on M. Night.

If what Nolfoc wrote is accurate, how could the ending be great? Sounds like a gaping hole to me.

Dude u are over thinking it.
[Show spoiler]It wasnt the radio didnt work in the elevator, when the elevator crashed and stopped some of the frequencys stoped working so the intercom within the elevator and the security station was malfunctioned meaning they could hear the security guards but the guards couldnt hear them in the elevator. It had nuthin to do with a radio/walky talky. So what u are sayin is irrelevent and maybe thats what u arent getting. So when the guy finally gets a kold of the walky talky he is able to speak through that peticular communicator and the guards can hear him through that but not the elevator intercom speaker. Two different things man. Hope that helps.

I know what you mean about the first film though; I like it a lot, but of all the films it has the least amount of action and entertainment. I give it a high score for its story and originality.

My scores for the Terimator films would look like:

"The Terminator" 4.5/5
"T2: Judgment Day" 5/5
"T3: Rise of the Machines" 4/5
"Terminator: Salvation" 3.5/5 (totally subject to change)

They all rock!
Yea, the story of the first is what kicked everything off and its a great story, but that's mostly where the 3.5 comes from for me. I do like the film, the characters (well the Terminator and Reese, I'm not a fan of Sarrah until she's bad*** in part 2 ) just not as much as in the other films.

Broken Trail
2006 NR 184 minutes

Nominated for six Emmys (with a win for Best Miniseries), this Western follows a pair of horse traders who rescue five Chinese girls sold into sexual slavery. While herding 500 horses to Wyoming, Prentice Ritter (Robert Duvall) and his nephew (Thomas Haden Church) cross paths with the quintet and reluctantly take them under their wing. But the men's good turn leads to a run-in with the madam who bought the girls and the nasty ex-con sent to reclaim them.
Hmm...sounds like it could be interesting.

How did you enjoy it?

entertainment wise, all are great. but story wise, Salvation barely had any. it was like 2 hours of "what is this?" that left me overall pretty disappointed. the only Terminator movie that left me feeling that way
Salvation was also the one that was the most outside of your "zone"; its much more an action movie than the others. It also has Bale, who you for some reason that is illogical loathe beyond all reason
[Show spoiler]

I've been watching the Terminator movies since I was a kid (Terminator 2 was the first R movie my dad let me see when I was like 7 or something ) and enjoy each of them. Salvation is my favorite of the bunch personally, just edging out Terminator 2.
